Uncharted 3 Will Support PSN Pass
Sorry everyone. I hate to say it, but it’s true: Uncharted 3 will support PSN Pass, Sony’s own version of the much-hated online pass. I can’t say that I’m exactly surprised that Sony is going this route, but after it was initially revealed, there was a part of me hoping that the PSN Pass would just die off silently.

Of course, with handfuls of publishers making use of online pass these days, that hope was obviously a foolish one. The news that Uncharted 3 will utilize PSN Pass comes from Sony España Software Manager Juan Jiménez, who in an interview with The Vault (as reported by Joystiq) said that they would be implementing PSN Pass in an effort to both combat piracy and score some coin off used copies of the game.
Even though PSN Pass was announced earlier this year, we’ve only seen it used on one release so far in 2011: Resistance 3. We’ll see that number rise to two with the release of Uncharted 3, and it’s likely that all Sony exclusives in the future will support the feature.
It always pisses me off to see a company implement online passes with their games, and it makes me sad to see gamers actually standing up for online passes these days. I understand that there doesn’t seem like there’s anything we can do to prevent the implementation of online pass – because no matter how much we complain, publishers are still using it – but just because publishers don’t listen doesn’t mean we just have to roll over and take it.
I mean, I get that publishers want to make money off of used copies of games, but that doesn’t mean that they’re entitled to the money they think they are. The problem is compounded when you remember that publishers are locking vital features of a game until you shell out even more money just to access features of a game you already paid for. If all publishers were doing something like id Software and Bethesda are doing with Rage, I would be fine with it. Locking the multiplayer component of a game, however, is a pretty lame thing to do.
What do you think? Would you be all right with online pass if it was approached in a different way than it currently is, or do you think that publishers offering content to those that buy it new and locking it for those that buy it used is lame no matter how they go about it? Are you fine with the implementation of online pass as it is? Take to the comments section and let us know your thoughts!
