Verizon Wireless Has Pulled The HTC Thunderbolt Gingerbread Update

Voicemail Bug Reportedly Causes Verizon To Pull The Android 2.3 Update For The HTC Thunderbolt Smartphone

Well, look what we have here, an Android update that began rolling out only to get pulled. Granted, the update will return, however this seems to be a perfect example of why we often suggest that being first to update is not the best option. Anyway, that update was for the HTC Thunderbolt with Verizon, which was just detailed by Verizon a few days back.

According to what we have seen, the issue that caused the update to be pulled deals with voicemail notifications. And depending on how many voicemails you receive, that may or may not be all that big of a deal for those who have already updated their handset. Me personally, I use Google Voice for my calls so I would likely have not noticed anyway. Of course, on the flip side, given it attracted enough attention that Verizon pulled it, we suspect there must have been more than a few complaints.

The official statement has come by way of Albert Aydin, a spokesperson for Verizon.

“It has come to the attention of Verizon Wireless and HTC that customers using the Thunderbolt by HTC have experienced a voicemail notification error with the recent software update. As a result, the update has been temporarily suspended while the companies work together to resolve the issue. Verizon Wireless and HTC anticipate the update being available soon; customers will be notified directly on their devices when it is ready for download.”

That being said, judging from the wording in the above statement we suspect that the update will come available again sooner rather than later. And at the risk of sounding like we are saying ‘we told you so’ — it may not be the best plan to update the moment you receive the notification on your phone. Bottom line, have some patience and let others be the test case because in the end, I think many would agree that it is better to have the previous version working perfectly than the new version working not so perfectly.

The development community was aware of this bug for months. Perhaps someone at HTC or VZW should get themselves an account at xda or rootzwiki, it would do wonders for their software development.

    2. B says:

The GB issues are not only with the faulty VM notifications on the official OTA. They include broken “voice dialer” where the prompting feature no longer works, so using a bluetooth in your car or headset won’t indicate to whom you are dialing and you will likely get a misdial. VZW has made me seriously think about an iphone and its iOS testing/stability over android anymore.

Every time I turn my phone on I get an error message saying i’m not logged in and an option to quit. It’s very aggravating and as long as it has taken to get the update one would think that they would get it right. I have an upgrade in november and I wont be getting another HTC phone i’m done with HTC. I will be getting the new Samsung prime or whatever they are calling it.
