Google+ Will Soon Get A Name Change

Bradley Horowitz Says The Google Plus Name Will Be Dropped & Will Simply “Be Google”

Google is up to some changes. Until now, many of Google’s services have been very separate, each going their own way and becoming their own animals. YouTube, Gmail, Picasa, and even Google+ have been their own products on a certain level. Google is working on changing all of that which will include a name change for Google Plus.

Google+ will lose its name and will become all that Google is and will tie into everything in Google. Google VP of products Bradley Horowitz explains it this way:

Until now, every single Google property acted like a separate company. Due to the way we grew, through various acquisitions and the fierce independence of each division within Google, each product sort of veered off in its own direction.

… But Google+ is Google itself. We’re extending it across all that we do—search, ads, Chrome, Android, Maps, YouTube—so that each of those services contributes to our understanding of who you are.

How this will all play out, we’re not really sure. Google’s up to something here and all we can do is watch to see what it is.

There is no indication in that quote or anywhere else that the name will change.

    2. Tim Lenahan says:

I believe the gist behind many outlets assuming Google+ may drop its name comes from the idea that Google is working towards using Google+ to draw all of its services together finally instead of a ton of separate entities. We think Google+ will be instrumental in this process and that it will be the platform that makes it happen and as Horowitz said, “Google+ is Google itself…”

That leads many to believe that Google+ won’t be a separate social network but Google itself.

    3. wilbur says:

I think this is a fair inference from the quote. What was probably a bit of a stretch was that google plus will ‘soon’ get a name change and a headline with the phrase ‘Bradley Horowitz Says The Google Plus Name Will Be Dropped’, when it seems to be uncertain whether he means this let alone have actually said it.

Google+ isn’t a separate social network. Facebook you have to log into. You sign into any Google service and you’re in Google+. It’s in Gmail, Calendar, YouTube, etc. Again, the integration of other services doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll toss out the name Google+. How will they define the social aspects and tools if they toss the name? It’s highly speculative to assume they’ll release a product only to soon after drop the name.

What the quotes suggest is that they will continue to integrate the the other google services more deeply, and that future development won’t be done in compartments anymore. The quotes describe a philosophy, a function, and an iniative, but it gives not the slightest hint that the name will disappear.

    6. Kol Tregaskes says:

I think this is rubbish and is over-interpreting a comment. It makes no sense to change the name now that the service is launched, celebrities have joined, users have set-up their profiles, the URL is there and the +1 buttons are everywhere.
