Interceptor Entertainment Shelves Duke Nukem 3D Remake
Late last year, it was revealed that Interceptor Entertainment was given the go-ahead with their planned remake of Duke Nukem 3D from none other than Gearbox Software, the current owner of the Duke Nukem IP. That’s a pretty big boost when it comes to fan remakes – normally these fan remakes are shut down shortly after copyright holders catch wind of them, dooming them to be forgotten forever.

However, even though Interceptor Entertainment was given the green light by Gearbox, they’ve announced that their shelving the project for the time being. In a post of the Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded website, Interceptor explained the decision to shelve the project:
After careful consideration of the progress and direction of the project, Interceptor Entertainment has decided to finish Duke Nukem: Reloaded at a future date that is yet to be determined. Interceptor Entertainment still has the good will and non commercial license provided to us to use the Duke Nukem brand for our creative ambitions. We hope to resume that work again when the time is right.
No exact reason was given, but comments on the post suggest that their disputes over their license deal with Gearbox Software might be to blame.
Whatever the reason, it seems to have been a spur of the moment decision. Just last week Interceptor was posting updates on Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded, saying that they were close to having the first playable build of the remake finished and even getting the ball rolling on a podcast of their own.
Perhaps they became discouraged by the failure that was Duke Nukem Forever? Perhaps other, more lucrative projects have recently landed in their laps? Maybe the just decided that a Duke Nukem 3D remake just isn’t worth it anymore? We might not know the real reason for the project being shelved for quite some time, and even though they say that they plan to return to it at some point in the future, it seems all but dead at this point.
