Firefox 7 Now Available For Download [Mozilla Releases New Firefox Version, Promises “Drastically Improved Memory Handling”]

Mozilla continues to release new browser version after new browser version and we have already reached the seventh one in just a few months. Firefox 7 is now available for download to anyone still favoring Mozilla’s web surfing solution.

One of the most important features Firefox 7 is promising is the improvement of RAM usage. The browser is expected to use 20-50% less memory than previous versions, which is certainly something Firefox users will appreciate. Here are other important updates offered by the new browser build:

• Drastically improved memory handling for certain use cases
• Added a new rendering backend to speed up Canvas operations on Windows systems
• Bookmark and password changes now sync almost instantly when using Firefox Sync
• The ‘http://’ URL prefix is now hidden by default
• Added support for text-overflow: ellipsis
• Added support for the Web Timing specification
• Enhanced support for MathML
• The WebSocket protocol has been updated from version 7 to version 8
• Added an opt-in system for users to send performance data back to Mozilla to improve future versions of Firefox
• Fixed several stability issues
• Fixed several security issues

I used to be a faithful Mozilla user, but the way it hogged memory convinced me to try other browsers as well and I now live in a multi-browser environment where I happen to use Google Chrome and Apple’s Safari browsers.

Google Chrome is probably the main threat for Mozilla’s Firefox as the search giant’s browser is getting more and more marketshare. This could explain the number of major updates we’ve seen over the last few months from Mozilla. In fact, I wouldn’t get that comfortable with Firefox 7 just yet as a new release may be just around the corner.
