DICE Announces $1.6 Million Battlefield 3 Tournament

Battlefield 3 Worldwide Conquest Tournament Announced By DICE & Virgin Gaming, $1.6 Million Up For Grabs

Sure, for the vast majority of FPS players out there, a little competition is just a good time. For others, however, the competition is serious. For those who fall in the latter category, there’s never any shortage of competitive shooter tournaments to participate in, with many putting up some serious cash and prizes for the best of the best.

DICE has just announced one such tournament for Battlefield 3. Sponsored by Virgin Gaming, this particular Battlefield 3 tournament will kick off next year and a $1.6 million cash pot will be up for grabs. Unfortunately for PC gamers, you won’t get to participate – this competition is open only to PS3 and Xbox 360 players.

Aside from that, details on this tournament are still few and far between. We don’t know a specific kick off date for the tournament yet, only that it’ll begin sometime in early 2012. Perhaps due to a lack of details, DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson issued a statement about just how awesome Battlefield 3 players are:

The Battlefield series has always been a very social experience with its best-in-class multiplayer gameplay and we’re honored to have such passionate and loyal fans. We want to give them the best Battlefield experience we’ve ever created with Battlefield 3. The Worldwide Conquest Tournament with Virgin Gaming is a great way to celebrate the gameplay and reward our fans.

Don’t fret too much PC gamers, because excluding you from the tournament is likely a move to keep the playing field even between console players. After all, they don’t have the advantage of the better precision you’re given with mouse and keyboard controls. Plus, this is the first of many Battlefield 3 tournaments that are sure to come, and I’ll bet that a fair number of those inevitable tournaments will be open only to PC gamers.

If DICE and Virgin Gaming’s Worldwide Conquest Tournament sounds like it’s right up your alley, you can register for the tournament starting today.
