Dead Island Movie Green Lighted By Lionsgate Entertainment [Lionsgate Acquires Rights To Dead Island Movie, Announces Dead Island Flick Is In Early Production]

This next story is proof that producers can find a reason to base a movie on just about anything: Lionsgate has acquired the rights to make a Dead Island movie, but instead of taking their inspiration from the finished product, Lionsgate has decided to base the movie on the first teaser trailer released for the game way back in February 2011.

Don’t get me wrong, the trailer was a beautiful piece of work – it even won awards at the Cannes Film Festival. Truthfully, a lot of the trailers we saw for Dead Island were very cinematic in quality, but this one in particularly struck a cord with the executives at Lionsgate.

According to the press release issued by Lionsgate, the movie is in early production, with Sean Daniel of The Mummy and Tombstone fame attached to produce the zombie flick. It makes you wonder how long Hollywood can keep this zombie fad alive, but if it hasn’t died down in the world of video games yet, another zombie flick is probably a safe bet.

I’m actually looking forward to seeing how this movie turns out. Normally video game movies don’t fare very well at the box office or with critics, but there’s two main points to remember about this movie before you shrug it off: there franchise far worse than Dead Island out there, and this movie isn’t going to be directed by Uwe Boll. Hopefully.

Uwe Boll’s absence should be enough to give this Dead Island movie a fighting chance, but until it’s up on the big screen and the critics have spoken, I’ll remain skeptical. After all, this Dead Island movie still has quite a ways to go before it can be called finished, and there’s always a chance that it could get stuck in development hell during that period.

Time will tell though, and in the meantime we’ve posted the trailer that inspired Lionsgate to pursue the movie rights below.
