T-Mobile G1 Announcement Starts The Android Revolution Three Years Ago
It’s hard to believe that it’s only been three years since the first announcement of the release of an Android phone. However, this past Friday, September 23rd, marks three years since the T-Mobile G1 was announced. Since then it’s been three crazy years.

Back on September 23 of 2008, it was reported that the G1 was to be released October 22nd from T-Mobile and was going to be sold for $179 with a two-year contract. Some customers were able to pre-order the phone and the carrier only had 3G in 21 markets. When the phone was released, the overall feeling was that whatever the phone wasn’t shipped with could be found in the Android Market for download. Here’s what the phone had going for it:
- 3.2 inch screen with resolution of 320 x 480
- Single-core Qualcomm MSM 7201A clocked at 528 MHz
- 192MB of RAM
- 3.2MP rear-facing camera
Now Android is known by just about everyone and phones sport such specs as dual core processors, 1GB RAM, front and rear-facing cameras, run on 4G networks, and have grown to 4.5 inch touch screens with crazy resolution. Android has come so in just three years that who knows what the future will hold.
