Star Wars: The Old Republic Release Date Announced
Strap on your blaster and make sure your lightsaber crystals are up to snuff, because BioWare has finally announced a release date for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Unlike some other high-profile games, Star Wars: The Old Republic will be launching within 2011, but BioWare and Electronic Arts are cutting it close with their choice of release date.

As it turns out, Star Wars: The Old Republic will be out on December 20th, just in time to hook those high school and college students who have a couple of weeks off from school for the winter holidays. Star Wars: The Old Republic is going to have to compete for that spot under the tree though, because it’s going up against the likes of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, and Uncharted 3 with its winter release.
Still, with the staggering number of people who signed up for the beta, I’m sure Electronic Arts and BioWare won’t be left wanting for subscriptions when the game launches. There’s a lot of MMO players out there that seem to think that Star Wars: The Old Republic will be the WoW killer developers have been trying to make for years now, and even though I’m not so sure that anything can dethrone World of Warcraft at this point, I can concede that Star Wars: The Old Republic stands a better chance than any other MMO in recent history.
This also means that those displaced by December’s Star Wars Galaxies closure will have somewhere else to go without much in the way of turnaround time. It begs the question though: with gameplay that’s very different between Star Wars Galaxies and Star Wars: The Old Republic, can BioWare and Electronic Arts count on nabbing some of those loyal Star Wars Galaxies players when Star Wars: The Old Republic launches?
Now that we finally have a release date for Star Wars: The Old Republic, head down to the comments section and tell us what you think: will Star Wars: The Old Republic actually give World of Warcraft a run for its money, or will it just fade into obscurity like so many other MMOs before it?
