BioWare: Jade Empire May Get A Sequel Eventually

BioWare Co-Founders Tease That The Jade Empire IP Isn't Dead - Does This Mean We'll See A Sequel Sometime Soon?

BioWare is a studio that likes its franchises. The Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises are perhaps their biggest, with neither showing signs of slowing down. Even though Knights of the Old Republic got a sequel that BioWare had nothing to do with, Star Wars: The Old Republic could be considering something of an indirect sequel. Even Baldur’s Gate led to a sequel and plenty of spin off Dungeons and Dragons titles back in the 90s.

There’s just one game missing out on all of this franchise goodness: Jade Empire. Giving ancient China a more mystical spin, Jade Empire only ever enjoyed one release on the original Xbox back in 2005, and a new entry in the series has been requested by fans time and time again. Still, even with BioWare fans craving another Jade Empire, BioWare has been too distracted with the Mass Effect and Dragon Age trilogies to give us a sequel.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that Jade Empire as a BioWare IP is dead though, as BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk teased at the Eurogamer Expo that they were simply looking for a way to bring it back.

It’s an IP, it’s a setting that we’re really passionate about, and we still are. Both Greg and I were big believers in the IP. We’re just looking for the right way to deploy it. We have a lot of different projects now on a lot of different platforms, and you might see some of that [Jade Empire] in the future. You never know. We don’t have anything to announce on it right now, but it is a franchise that’s near and dear to us.

Frankly, I’d love to see another Jade Empire, and I certainly wouldn’t mind if they turned it into a trilogy like they’re doing with Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Besides the classic Baldur’s Gate games, I’d be tempted to say that Jade Empire is BioWare’s best game to date – even better than Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect. That’s probably going to be an opinion that’s unpopular among the BioWare-loving masses, but what can you do?
