Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Android 2.3.3 Software Update Detailed

It looks like Verizon has been busy updating the support pages for various Android smartphones. Earlier this morning we mentioned an update for the Droid Incredible 2 and now it looks like those sporting a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play also have an update on the way.

This update is noted on the Verizon website as coming soon, however there already seem to be some reports suggesting that users have already gotten the update. In other words, it looks like this one has begun rolling out, albeit on a limited basis so far. That being said, the update will bring your handset up to Android 2.3.3 and comes as software update 3.0.1.E.0.88.

The update measures in at 55MB and according to Verizon, it should take anywhere from 25-45 minutes to download and another 7-10 minutes to install. Based on that, we would suggest taking care of this update when you have an hour to spare. That and, when you are using a Wi-Fi connection. As for what the update brings, the change log breaks that down as follows;

Security

• Increased protection with the installation of new Android security patches.
• Increased functionality for Wi-Fi security, including disabling SSID broadcasting.

Email & Messaging

• Enhanced performance of the Exchange ActiveSync email syncing process.

Games, Apps and Media

• New DLNA functionality allows the device to easily share media (e.g. music, videos) with other DLNA-supported devices (e.g. TVs, set-top boxes, gaming consoles).
• Successfully copy applications to the SD card.
• Improved performance when viewing video playback using V CAST Video.
• The following games have been updated: Asphalt, Bruce Lee and Star Battalion.
• The following Apps now come preloaded: Google Books, Google Talk, Skype Mobile, Swype Keyboard, V CAST Apps and VZ Navigator.

With that, those carrying the Xperia Play with Verizon can either sit back and wait for the update notification to arrive, or take the pro-active route and check manually. And lastly, given things go wrong from time to time with these updates, we suggest letting others go first. That and, make sure you back up you important data before you begin.
