DC Universe Online Going Free-To-Play Next Month
In a move that’s all too familiar to MMO frequenters, Sony Online Entertainment has announced that DC Universe Online will be going free-to-play next month. After only being available for less than a year, this switch to a free-to-play model must mean that Sony‘s having a difficult time getting and keeping subscribers, right?

Actually, no. According to Sony Online Entertainment executive producer Lorin Jameson, free-to-play is the model they always wanted to go with, but they were forced to go with a subscription model after the cost of developing and advertising the game ended up being more than they originally expected.
Of course, players will be broken down into three different tiers once DC Universe Online goes free-to-play: Free, Premium, and Legendary. Free players will obviously be getting the least amount of content and bonuses, whereas spending $5 will rocket them to a Premium membership, which brings more character and inventory slots along with it.
Those who continue paying the $14.99 subscription fee will become Legendary players. Being in the top tier, Legendary players will get the most bonuses, with Sony Online Entertainment promising over 15 character slots, 80 inventory slots, and free access to all of the game’s DLC. There’s no exact date for DC Universe Online‘s transition yet, but keep it tuned here to TFTS and we’ll be sure to let you know once more details surface!
