iPad 2 & iPhone 5 (Running iOS 5) Jailbreak Coming Very Soon?

Chronic Dev Team Announces the Discovery of 5 Userland Exploits Ready to be Used to Jailbreak iOS 5 Devices Including iPhone 5 & iPad 2

Those of you interested in jailbreaking the iPhone 4S/5 as soon as they buy it should be excited to hear that the Chronic Dev Team has apparently discovered no less than five exploits that will make an untethered jailbreak possible.

In fact these new exploits can be used to jailbreak the iPad 2 in the near future, which is also interesting considering that only iPad 2 units running iOS 4.3.3 can, at this time, be jailbroken thanks to Comex’ JailbreakMe 3.0 tool.

The new exploits found are all userland holes that have been found over time by the Chronic Dev Team, according to p0sixninja, a prominent member of the team, who announced their existence at MyGreatFest, a jailbreaking convention.

Userland exploits are related to the software, which means Apple will patch them in future iOS 5 updates. Considering that there are five of them, it’s probably safe to say we’ll see plenty of jailbreak tools come out in the future, maybe as soon as the new iPhone and iOS 5 get launched.

A recent report also suggested that the Chronic Dev Team is working on an untethered jailbreak solution for iOS 5 devices, so, considering these newly announced security holes, we should assume that some of them will offer an untethered jailbreak option in the coming weeks/months.

All iOS 5 beta versions have been jailbroken so far, usually as soon as they were launched, but in all cases we were looking at a tethered jailbreak (which means the iOS device has to be connected to the computer when booting into a jailbreak state). Also one common thing for all iOS 5 beta jailbreaks is the fact that the iPad 2 was not supported.

In case you don’t already know it, all iOS devices prior to the iPad 2 are jailbreakable no matter what iOS they would run. In this case we’re looking at a hardware exploit that can’t be patched by a software update. But the iPad 2 and the iPhone 5 are new devices, therefore Apple made sure it dealt with the previous hardware-based exploits, and would need new tools to be jailbroken.

We’ll be back with more jailbreak updates in the near future, but you should remember that we’d never advise you to jailbreak or root any gadget. In fact, even if a legal procedure, it may void the warranty of your iOS device, so think twice before going for it!
