Mortal Kombat Takes Home The Big Bucks, Sells 3 Million Copies Worldwide

Warner Bros. & NetherRealm Announce 3 Million Mortal Kombat Units Sold, Can They Keep The Quality Up With Future Mortal Kombat Games?

If there was any question before, let it now be laid to rest: Warner Bros. has definitely hit a home run with this year’s Mortal Kombat reboot. They announced today that NetherRealm’s critical darling has sold a total of 3 million units worldwide, and while it may not be surprising to hear that a game as good as Mortal Kombat is selling well, just a few years ago you would have been laughed out of the room if you said that a Mortal Kombat game would one day be so successful.

Just last month Warner Bros. announced that they were closing in on 3 million sales, and though that number might not be impressive when compared to Activision’s recently-announced sales numbers for Call of Duty: Black Ops, it’s pretty damn impressive for a franchise like Mortal Kombat. After all, the franchise had been mistreated to the point of ridicule under Midway (which, no surprise, is now defunct).

It’s good to see that Warner Bros. and NetherRealm were able to turn the Mortal Kombat series around and deliver (at least what I think is) the best fighting game of the year. There’s plenty of room left to grow through, so as long as Warner Bros. and NetherRealm can keep the quality up, they can get used to seeing numbers like these in the future.
