iPhone Users Get Videosurf Mobile App For Improved Video Discovery
The world of online video is a crazy one, no mistake there. Between Hulu and Netflix and YouTube, not to mention the wide array of other choices out there, it’s easy to get a little lost when it comes time to figure out what to watch. But the folks out at VideoSurf are out to help, and have thus just tipped us off to their new VideoSurf Mobile app for iPhone users, as well as for Android users. Both apps are a free download on their respective app stores, but they’ll do quite a bit more than you might think.

VideoSurf Mobile gives you a variety of options, not the least of which is the reportedly unique V-ID ability (so far, anyway) to use the iPhone camera to record a snippet of a television show, and then from there, identify exactly what show it is you’re watching and provide more information about it from there. But for those of you thinking that the info button on most any television remote will do likewise and without having to record video thirdhand first, there’s more in store here. Not only will VideoSurf Mobile identify the show for you, it will go several steps farther by offering up information about the show’s cast, the show itself, and of course, related content. And by related content, they not only mean unique content directly related to the show in question (behind the scenes stuff and the like where available) but they’ll also go so far as to suggest similar material and where it can be found. For instance, someone who identifies a snippet of A&E’s Storage Wars might get directed to Spike’s equivalent, Auction Hunters.
Plus, there’s a social networking facet too, allowing you to cram your Twitter feed and Facebook news feed with “hey I’m watching” posts in a bid to help your friends get the same discovery effect.
It’s true that one of the big problems of online video is one of discovery. If you’ve ever tried to search down a new video on YouTube lately you’ve seen the problem first hand. And considering that, at the last report I spotted back in May, YouTube was getting better than two days’ worth of video (48 hours) of video uploaded every single minute, it’s not hard to believe that you can’t find very specific things in the sheer flood of video coming in.
So what do you guys think? Is this a smart idea to figure out what to watch online and on television alike? Or do you have other ways to find your favorite shows? Either way, we want to hear from you, so hit the comments section and tell us what you think!
