Amazon Kindle Tablet Sales Projection Cut in Half

Amazon More Likely to Sell 2 Million Kindles in 2011 Instead of Earlier-Reported 4 Million, But Kindle Geared Toward Android Dominance 2012 Onwards

Amazon is getting ready to release its upcoming Kindle e-reader this November. It’s not just an ebook reader, but an Android-powered tablet computer that will supposedly challenge the iPad and other tablets if not for technological advancement, but for sales figures. The Kindle might not sell as well as earlier expected, but sales figures are still expected to be strong.

Amazon had long been teasing the market with a possible tablet launch this year. The company recently confirmed a 7-inch tablet computer to be released in time for the holiday season, named simply as the Kindle. It seems that while industry observers were hoping this would be the long-awaited iPad killer, it will, in fact play in an altogether different market. In short, Amazon won’t be competing directly with Apple, nor will they compete directly against Android tablet makers. The Kindle will be in a class of its own.

Given the Kindle branding and Amazon’s expertise in retail, the company initially pegged sales figures within 2011 at 4 to 5 million. At $250, the Kindle undercuts most other tablet computers, such as Apple’s own $499 iPad 2. And even if the Kindle were not as powerful and feature-packed as the iPad or full-fledged Android devices, its target market is the everyday user and not the tablet, PC or Apple geek who wants cutting edge technology.

But recent projections are cutting this estimate in half. Barclays has shared a more realistic 2 million-unit projection in 2011. Even so, Barclays analyst Anthony DiClemente says Kindle sales will remain solid in 2012, with an estimated 6.4 million devices sold within that time frame. Amazon also reportedly has a 10-inch tablet in the works, which is expected to sell 1.5 million units in 2012.

At this rate, Amazon is on its way to be the top-selling Android tablet maker in history. While they might not necessarily challenge the iPad head-on, the Kindle is more likely to eat into the market share of other Android tablet makers.

Nook Color Android-based tablet/eReader from Barnes & Noble has been on the market for over a year and sold millions of units at $250. Gives Flash, apps, videos, color magazines and ebooks with video inserts, and the best anti-glare coated screen on the market. Technology “leader” Amazon is finally catching up with the book store company by copying their device.
Kindle only supports eBooks in its proprietary AZW format. Nook, on the other hand, supports both DRM-protected and DRM-free ebooks in ePub format thus it supports ebooks from B&N store, from any other DRM-free source on the web, and from public libraries.
If you walk in with the Nook to Barnes & Noble store, you’re allowed to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi.
Nook Color has several apps that already come with the device (Pandora Internet radio, QuickOffice, etc.) and hundreds of other apps are available for download. Also, you can use the Social Settings screen to link your NOOK Color to your Facebook account and your Twitter account. You can also import all your contacts from your Google Gmail account. Once you have linked to Facebook and Twitter and set up email contacts, you can lend and borrow books, recommend books, and share favorite quotes with your friends. Nook store has over 2 million of paid books and about the same number of free public domain books.

It’s kind of funny, the specs I’ve seen of the Android-based Kindle put it in line with the Barnes & Noble Nook. It’s going to be underpowered in terms of performance and more like the iPad 1 specs. Something people don’t realize is by March when the iPad 3 comes out the iPad 1 will cost 299 from Apple and the iPad 2 will cost 399.

Another thing is that people have been buying the Kindle specifically because it uses e-ink instead of a standard lcd. Amazon has even done commercials saying it’s been for reading outdoors yet here they are trying to get into the tablet race.

When the Xoom and Tegra tablets first started coming out every Android user compared those specs to the first iPad saying they were going to win on those alone. That obviously wasn’t the case as they were comparing it to the wrong model. Android needs higher specs in order to run smoothly. iOS is streamlined and simple so it doesn’t need a lot of resources that’s why the iPad appears to run faster on inferior hardware. People are buying the iPad because of it’s exclusive available apps. That’s a big difference from people buying Android tablets just because it isn’t an iPad. These are media consumption devices you can’t get real work done on them and the iPad is currently the best. I’d prefer a Windows 8 intel based tablet personally because then I could run my favorite games and apps which would be a lot more useful to me.
