Apple Gives Up, Starts Selling Final Cut Pro 7 Again

After Outrage Over The Dumbing Down Of Final Cut Pro X, Apple Begins Discreetly Selling Older Version On Phone

The new Final Cut Pro X came out this year, and while it was the cheapest version ever, it received almost universal disdain from the professional editing community that had held Final Cut in such high regard beforehand. Although it seemed like Apple wouldn’t be selling new licenses the older Final Cut Studio, they’ve now given up and have discreetly selling it to those to ask. Here’s the catch, you have to order by phone.

Those who call 1-800-MY-APPLE can reach Apple’s customer service and can order the legacy software that way. Yes, very old fashioned, but it’s clear that Apple doesn’t want tons of people knowing about this. The company has said that the missing professional features from Final Cut Pro X will be patched in, and as for the “iMovie-like” UI changes, folks are just supposed to get used to those.

Final Cut Pro X is just $299 in the Mac App Store, and Apple will be charging just a bit more for the old Final Cut Pro Studio. Apple will be asking $999 from those who can’t use the new version. That’s a bit of a difference, but Final Cut Pro Studio does include more than Final Cut Pro 7, as some other sites have pointed out.

It’s a bit cumbersome to call in, but Apple is finally offering the older version of Final Cut for those who want it. Is this a good move, or should Apple make Final Cut Studio available on the Mac App Store? What’s your take on this one? Tell us about it in the comments section.
