U.S. Service Members Enjoy Free Calls From Gmail

Overseas Military Personnel Can Call Family For Free Thanks To Google

If you are oversees as a U.S. military service person, you may understand how expensive it can be to call home. The charges can surely add up and replenishing phone cards can cost a pretty penny. Google claims to understand this and because of that they are beginning to offer free calling from Gmail for members of the U.S. military.

Calling from Gmail for free is easy to setup and use. To verify you are a member of the U.S. military, you need to add a .mil email address to your Gmail account. Then you’ll have to click the Call phone link in the left column. You’ll probably be prompted to install the voice and video Gmail plugin.

Google is offering this free calling feature for service people at least until the end of 2011. Google gives the reason for this act of kindness: “We recognize and appreciate the sacrifices U.S. troops make when they serve abroad, and we’re proud to help make it a little bit easier for them to stay connected and hear a familiar voice.”
