Thunderbolt & Droid Incredible Gingerbread Updates Coming, Says So HTC’s Facebook, Twitter

HTC Confirms Via Social Networking Android 2.3 Will Hit Thunderbolt & Droid Incredible in September

What happened to that guy that kept crying “Wolf!” all the time? HTC is, again, mentioning Gingerbread updates for a couple of phones that should have received the updates a long time ago, the HTC Thunderbolt and the HTC Droid Incredible.

Of course it’s easy to talk about Android updates when you’re looking at them from the sidelines, but HTC did know what it was getting itself into when it launched these two devices, didn’t it? I’m also fairly sure it knew that the customers will want that recently launched Gingerbread version of Android installed on their Thunderbolts and Droid Incredibles as soon as possible.

The case of the Thunderbolt is particularly interesting considering that we’ve seen various leaks originating from HTC customer support emails and suggesting the 4G LTE phone was going to get the Gingerbread update by the end of the first half of the year. We’re now in August.

HTC chose an interesting way of confirming that Android 2.3 is coming to these device owners by September. It did so via social networking tools, or Twitter and Facebook. The Facebook page is currently unavailable at this time but at least the Twitter status update still reads:

There are no actual launch dates, and given that today is the last day of August, we could see the update hit at any point next month, starting with tomorrow, although I wouldn’t hold my breath on it.

September 1 is a special day for HTC’s Windows Phone 7 division as the company is expected to launch two new smartphones in London, both running Mango, the Eternity and the Omega. That won’t help very much Thunderbolt and Droid Incredible owners though, unless they plan to ditch Android in favor of Microsoft’s mobile OS.

Anyone running an unofficial Gingerbread version on any of these two phones yet?
