LG Announces 3D Game Converter For Optimus 3D
“Aside from a couple of new LCD monitors, LG is planning on demonstrating something a bit more exciting during the upcoming IFA 2011 in Berlin. According to LG, the company will show “the world’s first OpenGL-based 2D to 3D game conversion engine” for smartphones. The program was conceived in order to expand content availability of the LG Optimus 3D smartphone.

The 3D Game Converter will be included in LG Optimus 3D’s first update, though when that will exactly roll out depends on the carrier. True to its concept, the converter can transform 2D games into 3D on the smartphone, and do it all for free. When you open a 2D game using the converter, the game is scanned to see if it’s 3D-optimized so the converter can instantly transform it into 3D. A total of 50 titles optimized for the converter will be released on October, and0 50 will be added by the end of the year. If the game isn’t optimized, all you have to do adjust the settings manually.
LG says:
Far from being a gimmick, LG’s 3D Game Converter automatically recognizes the depth information based on the location of each object and separates the 2D graphic images for each eye,” explained Dr. Henry Nho, LG’s 3D Technology Evangelist. “Using the existing depth information, the 3D Game Converter generates two different images — one for the foreground and one for the background. It then uses a thin film called Parallax Barrier on the display to show the left image to the left eye and the right image to the right eye, creating an illusion of visual depth.
While it does sound a cool concept, what really matters is the result, so we’d keep you updated about the 3D converter when it does get demonstrated.
