Sony MDR-DS7500 Headphones Offer 3D Sound & Peace For Your Neighbors

Sony's MDR-DS7500 Headphones Promise Home Theater Sound Without Waking The Neighborhood

One of the great tradeoffs of the home theater concept is that of sound. Naturally, you want it loud and sufficiently potent to the point that, with the right movie, you can see your windows flex under the force of the bass. But doing that for any length of time often gets the neighbors upset, and unless you live in an area of low population density, you simply can’t crank that as loud as you might like. This is why some places have put up some really impressive headphones, giving you the chance to put your sound up as loud as you can stand it but without the torch and pitchfork mobs that hit every time you put in Die Hard. And Sony’s got a treat for you polite home theater buffs in the form of the MDR-DS7500 headphones.

Sony’s MDR-DS7500 headphones offer up 3D sound, geared for your 3D movies with the inclusion of Dolby Pro Logic IIz systems and support for 7.1 channel surround sound. And if you’re like me, you don’t just use your home theater gear for movies, but also television and gaming, which is actually covered pretty nicely with the MDR-DS7500s by virtue of a variety of different settings, including settings geared to optimize voice, movies (which have not only voice but effects like explosions and such), and games (which are pretty much all effects). They come with some extra padding and a design specifically geared for folks wearing 3D glasses, so you won’t have to worry about snugging those earcups down wrong over the stems of the 3D glasses. They’re even wireless, by the look of it, and come with their own base station and decoder.

Naturally, a set of headphones offering that range of capability won’t be cheap, so you probably won’t be surprised to see that the whole package (as pictured above) starts hitting Japan October 10th, and they’ll start selling at $643 US (or 49,350 yen) for the whole package with additional headphones selling at $321 (24,675 yen), where they will likely still do pretty brisk business considering the population density in places like Tokyo.

So what do you guys think of Sony’s MDR-DS7500? Too pricey for headphones, or a boon to home theater watchers everywhere? Think you’ll get a set if they make it to your neck of the woods? Either way, we want to hear from you, so hit the comments section and fill us in!
