Verizon Rumored To Be Launching The Samsung DROID Prime In October [Verizon Passing On The Galaxy S II, But Tipped To Launch The Android 4.0 Running Samsung Droid Prime In October]

Samsung is going to have their Galaxy S II announcement during a press event in New York City on Tuesday August 30th and coming as a bit of disappointment for Verizon customers, we already know that Big Red is going to pass on this handset. But that being said, the real question is why Verizon has decided to pass and perhaps a bit more interesting — what they plan to launch instead.

After all, the Galaxy S II is a nicely spec’d device. Based on that, we have to wonder what Verizon has in-store that will be better. Of course, there is the obvious in that they may not have anything better, but just want something different. And while that would be one theory, there is also the rumor mill and that is currently full of Verizon related chatter.

With that, we remind — these details have yet to be confirmed by Verizon. In fact, they are reportedly coming from a “close source” of the folks over at BGR. First up, the reasoning as to why Verizon is passing on the Galaxy S II;

“Verizon doesn’t think the Samsung GALAXY S II will be competitive with the iPhone 5 when it launches.”

And with that, it looks like they will indeed have something better. Well, maybe not better than the iPhone, but better in terms of another Android device as compared to the Galaxy S II. Yup, something better than the Galaxy S II. That device, the Samsung Droid Prime which is reportedly going to be released exclusively by Verizon in October.

The Samsung Droid Prime is said to be coming as the flagship Android offering for Verizon and it will arrive (as the first to be) running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and sporting the model number of SCH-i515.

While all this sounds interesting enough, and somewhat believable — it does go against the whole Nexus line. After all, one would have suspected that the first Ice Cream Sandwich handset was going to be a Nexus branded model. Furthermore, we cannot help but wonder how long this will be an exclusive offering or if maybe Verizon will get the Droid Prime and the other carriers will see a similarly spec’d handset that is released as part of the Nexus line.
