Amazon to Sell Up to 5 Million Tablets in Q4? [Forrester Estimates 3-5 Million Amazon Android Tablet Sales By the End of the Year]

Last week a report suggested that Amazon may be interested in taking an initial loss on its home-grown Android tablets, by selling them for as low as $299. The obvious reason for such a sales approach is to convince customers to buy plenty of tablets right from the launch of the new devices. Amazon would then cash in on their content needs, as the giant electronics retailer also has its own digital stores ready to offer movies, music and Android apps.

Today we hear, via Reuters, that Amazon is estimated to sell up to 5 million tablets by the end of the year, which is an impressive number for this new player in the tablet business. There are plenty of other tablets that were regarded to be, at some point or another, iPad killers like the Motorola Xoom, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, the BlackBerry PlayBook and the HP TouchPad, but I didn’t hear their creators mention they reached that 3-5 million mark Forrester Research is proposing today for the unnamed Amazon tablets.

Such a performance forecast for Amazon would be all the more interesting considering that there’s just one more full quarter left in 2011. Therefore Amazon would accomplish record sales for an Android tablets in less time than more established rivals like Motorola, Samsung, HTC and others would need to announce 3-5 million tablet sales.

Let’s remember that analysts can be wrong when it comes to such estimates particularly considering that Amazon has not announced its first tablet yet. We have no idea what specs and features it will have to offer, and such details will surely count when it comes to fighting against the iPad 2 for customer attention. Apple’s device doesn’t have the best hardware in tablet town, but it offers a great consumer experience. And Apple is selling millions of iPads. On the other hand, iPad competitors have tried to lure in buyers with better specs, but they failed to turn their products into best-sellers.

What will Amazon do? Will the company launch a high-end Android tablet and offer significant discounts to its customers or will we see a mid-ranged device selling for mid-ranged prices?
