That Steve Jobs Photo [Why You Won't Be Seeing It on TFTS]

Here at TFTS we take pride in covering, bit by bit, the tech world. We’re constantly looking for the newest details on the latest device or invented technology. We show you rumors, leaks and bring you all the official news, day-in and day-out. We love gadgets, and writing about them, and we’re always ready to provide reasons for whatever stance we’d take no matter the article.

We bring you the good, the bad and the ugly from the tech business, as it happens, up to a point. What we won’t do though is to cross a certain moral line, the same one that drives us to accurately present the facts and question the unconfirmed stories.

We won’t show you that picture, because that’s not the way this game is played, at least in our view. Whether or not you have already seen it is not important. What matters is that we won’t feature it. We won’t get into details about it and we won’t question it. We won’t comment on such personal stuff and we won’t approve comments on the matter that would cross that invisible line I was referring to just before. That’s not who we are. And we will never be that site that’s ready to break all boundaries just for those extra hits.

I wish that more websites were like this one. I came across it by accident and my heart sank.

Well said Chris. An honorable and correct decision, in my opinion.

Whatever your moral objections are to that picture, as long as Steve Jobs is a part of Apple in a meaningful manner (and Chairman of the Board is certainly a meaningful position), his health is a matter of concern to all Apple shareholders. As such, the picture is legitimate news.

      Hi Joe,

I totally take your point, of course this is legitimate news – but, for us, actually posting up the image in question was something we agreed, as a team, that was beyond what we would feel comfortable with. Yes, its legitimate news but its already widely known that Jobs is not a well man, so posting up this pretty harrowing photo doesn’t actually bring anything more to the table…

There has to be limits. Invading on a man’s privacy to this extent seeming merely for the ‘spectacle’ of it in this circumstance is not something that we feel we can sit comfortably with. Yes, getting hits on the site is our bread and butter, but not at all costs, and not if it means simply doing anything, without giving a thought to someone’s privacy, merely to get impressions. We are not that mercenary as individuals, thus it follows that, as a team, we apply the same rules.

I accept that you disagree, and I respect your perspective but, as a team, and as a site, this wasn’t something that we were prepared to invade upon. As said, there has to be limits, if only those based on a sense of decency and respect for the personal rights of others, and posting this image was seen, by us all, as being way below that line of acceptability.

The only reason we felt we should make our stance clear is so that we can convey to those visiting the site that it had been an active call on out part not to venture into this territory. Moreover, we also feel pretty strongly about it.

Yes, invading the man’s privacy like that is tasteless. Yet, much of Apple’s success is based on the image and charisma of its CEO, and you and other media seemed to have no qualms about showing and exploiting that. Maybe you should make separating the people from the technology a more general principle in your reporting.
