New York Apple Stores Closing Before Hurricane Irene [With New York Facing Mandatory Evacuation, Most City Apple Stores Closing This Weekend]
There’s bad weather heading for the Northeastern United States, meaning that the rest of the world will hear constant discussion about it on the internet for a week before it comes, and then two weeks after it happens. Regardless, Hurricane Irene looks headed for New York City, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg has ordered the first mandatory evacuation in the history of New York City. Some Apple Stores in the great city are closing, as well, for this weekend.

The Fifth Avenue Apple Store, the glass cube, is famously open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year – come hell or high water, except for the high water part, apparently. MacRumors is reporting that they phoned down to the Fifth Avenue Apple Store and the employees there confirmed that the store will be closed on Saturday and Sunday due to the severe weather and evacuation of New York.
Other Apple Stores in the City will also be closing. The SoHo, Upper West Side, 14th Street and Staten Island Apple Stores will all be closed this weekend at all. In addition to the evacuation zones, New York’s public transportation system will be shut down this weekend, probably because all those underground tunnels are at risk of flooding. New York is a public transportation city, so it will probably be hard for anybody who is staying in the city to get around to the Apple Stores, anyway.
The Apple Store in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on the Pier, is also closed. Other stores up and down the Northeast seem to be open, but you should call first if you absolutely need to go out and get that new iMac this weekend.
