Acer Shows Off The TravelMate 8481T

Acer's TravelMate 8481T Brings Mobile Computing For A More Business Crowd

Business laptops are something of a strange bird. They don’t actually have a whole lot in them, from what I’ve seen of the breed so far, that really separates them from normal everyday laptops. But looking at the Acer TravelMate 8481T, I can see where business users–not to mention the regular sort–might get plenty of use out of this new laptop.

The Acer TravelMate 8481T offers up a 14 inch full HD LCD display in a 13 inch laptop, which by itself is something of a minor achievement. But it’s also offering up a magnesium-aluminum housing that’s said to take a few knocks and jostles better than the ordinary, as well as being powered by Intel Core i5 processors, four gigs of RAM (it’s upgradable to eight), up to 320 gig of hard drive storage that itself packs options like a Disk Anti-Shock Protection system that improves protection against physical shocks to the drive itself, and at least one USB 3.0 port. You’ll even get a multi-level security system along with BioProtection Fingerprint systems which let you lock the system to respond only to your fingerprint.

Admittedly, regular users might be a bit turned off by the comparatively low hard drive size (when you start thinking that 320 gig is “comparatively low”, you know that hard drive sizes have really advanced), the stopping at Intel Core i5 processing, and the emphasis on security rather than entertainment, but it does seem to be the case that this really is a business laptop, if for no other reason than so much of its systems seem appropriate for business users. The protections for the mobile user (the housing and hard drive protections), the security upgrades…all of these have “road warrior” stamped all over them.

And if you’re looking for a laptop that gets the job done, you’ll be able to get one of these starting early next month, at last report, and for a suggested price of $1000.

So what do you guys think here? An all-business laptop that gets the job done but leaves a little room for fun? Or a hopeless slacker that can’t handle the work?
