Sprint To Sell The iPhone 5 Mid-October, Say Reports
Well, well…if there was any doubt that the iPhone 5 was coming out in the late September / early October time frame, that’s about to be put to bed thanks to a report that emerged from no less than the Wall Street Journal. And the date is only secondary to the reports of just who else will be selling the iPhone: Sprint Nextel.

The Wall Street Journal, in talking to a set of the ever-popular “anonymous sources”, said that the iPhone 5 will be getting the full treatment out at Sprint Nextel, and that they would start selling the phones in mid-October. This is important for two major reasons: one, it’s the closest thing to a confirmed launch date we’ve heard yet and falls right in with a variety of earlier projections pegging pre-orders for late September with delivery dates for early October, and two, Sprint Nextel has yet to actually offer up an iPhone, which will put them on at least something like equal footing with its primary two competitors, AT&T and Verizon.
What’s particularly interesting here, though, is that Sprint is, at last report, the only provider still offering an unlimited data plan. Now, when you stop and consider that the iPhone 5 will be pretty much the same across providers, but only Sprint will be offering an unlimited data plan, that’s going to shake up the market quite a bit and probably send a good chunk of business Sprint’s way. Am I saying there’s a destabilization in the market coming, maybe a new second place? Not necessarily, but at the very least, Sprint will likely gain on its competitors and narrow the gap between second and third.
What’s more, Sprint will even have a backup plan to deal with the inevitable disappointed customers, as they’ll also reportedly be selling the iPhone 4 as well as the iPhone 5.
Good for all concerned, I’d say, as long as they can keep the total number of iPhone 5 models in the system up. But what do you guys think? For those of you planning to buy an iPhone 5, will you buy from Sprint? Or would you sooner stick to one of Sprint’s competitors? Whatever your plan, hit the comments section and tell us about it!

I am currently a sprint phone owner and would love to see this really happen. My contract is up around the same time and I have been debating whether or not to switch to verizon for the same reason. If the plans stay the same i just might stay where i am at, if they get data capped ill probably switch carriers since Sprint has a history of dropped calls in my area.
I hope that these rumors are true. I have been with Sprint through thick and thin, buying Android and being a loyal customer for over 10 years. I have wanted to try the IPhone for some time and now, if this is true, I can have that opportunity. I think it’s a great move on their part and will make a lot of customers happy!!!
I have been hoping for the iphone for several years. If they (sprint)sell it, I will switch!
Well, the WSJ is a very reliable source, that goes without saying, so it’s looking positive….
A lot of Sprint owners undoubtedly agree with you, Anon.
Jeremy–not only you and the customers, but Apple too, gaining a whole new channel to sell from. Plus, if the AT&T / T-Mobile thing goes off, they’ll have a good chunk of the smartphone carriers out there.
Exactly. It’s looking very good for Sprint customers right now, and may be looking not so good for AT&T and Verizon in response.
My family has Sprint right now and our contract runs out in Nov. We are already debating Iphones with Verizon or EVOs with Sprint. The choice might be easier if we could stay with Sprint.
I too am a long time Sprint customer (>10 years). Currently using a Nexus S my 2nd Droud phone. Will I like the switch to the iPhone? I am a PC guy not a MAC guy.
Will this new iPhone 5 come with the Nextel direct connect capabilities?
im sooooo excited! i cant wait for the iphone to come to sprint!
I have been looking forward to this for at least a year. I’m out of contract and ready to jump on a couple iphones for my wife and myself
Its about time Sprint gets the iphone. Sprint needs to just keep the unlimited data plans for it too and Sprint will be the number one carrier in no time. Cant wait to get mine…
Indeed it would. And it would come at just the right time for you too!
I’d say you would, but just to make sure, you may want to go get hands-on with it. You can find the current iPhones at AT&T or Verizon stores, and that will give you a better idea. No one knows just what the iPhone 5 will be like, of course, but you’ll get a handle on the iPhone concept by trying out the iPhone 4.
Right now, no one knows, at least not that I’ve been able to find.
I don’t have a problem with Sprint and have been waiting a long time for this. I’ve been with Sprint for 6 years and toyed with the idea of switching carriers because of the iphone. My contract is up the first of the year and I am sooooo glad I’ve held out. Looks loke Sprint is going to deliver!!!! Geeked beyond measure. The unlimited data is/will be a tremendous draw as well
I am a loyal Sprint customer however I thought about switching carriers in order to get an IPhone,. I planned to stick with Sprint because of the best prices for full data. Other plans are too complicated and confusing. Now with he potential for the IPhone I will for sure stick with Sprint.
I honestly think that Sprint will be soon ahead when they do come out with the iPhone…ESPECIALLY if they keep the unlimited data plans. That is the main reason I switched to Sprint, simple affordable individual plans. I just hope there won’t be too many bugs with the new iPhone. I may stick with my EVO for a couple more months.
That does assume, though, that Sprint’s network can keep up. The iPhone might well cost them unlimited data.
