Sonic The Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 Not Launching Until 2012

A little while ago, we brought you the news that Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2 still exists, even though we hadn’t heard anything from Sonic 4 in quite a long time. As it turns out, Sonic 4: Episode 2 won’t launch until sometime in 2012 – potentially making the period between the release of Episode 1 and the release of Episode 2 as long as two years.

Not only that, but Sega has planned this from the beginning. Speaking to Eurogamer, Sonic Team’s Takashi Iikuza explained that they had Sonic Generations planned before Sonic 4: Episode 1 was released, and they knew all along that they were going to wait until Sonic Generations was on shelves before they turned their attention toward getting Episode 2 out the door.

So basically, Sega’s taking their tips on how to release an episodic game from Valve instead of a studio that knows what an episodic game should be, like Telltale Games. So does this mean that we’ll have to wait until 2014 for Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 3? That’s still unclear at the moment, because Iikuza doesn’t even know if Sonic Team will develop a third episode – an uncertainty Half-Life 2 fans can definitely sympathize with.

No solid release date is set, but we’ll be sure to let you know once Sega and Sonic Team decide to spill more details!
