iPhone 5 Spotted in App Logs, Dual CDMA/GSM Mode Confirmed
Earlier today we heard that an iPhone model (iPhone 4S?) similar to the current iPhone 4 may be launched by Apple and its carrier partners this fall and now we have confirmation that the iPhone 5 will indeed be a dual-mode CDMA/GSM “World Phone”, just as rumored before.

According to TechCrunch, a developer “of some of the most popular apps on the iOS platform today” has confirmed that his app has been installed on iPhone 5 units, a fact revealed by app usage logs.
This iPhone 5 unit, currently in testing, was running iOS 5 and sported two MNCs and MCCs. The MNS is the mobile network code and the MCC is the mobile country code and these are unique for each mobile carrier, in this case for AT&T and Verizon. In other words the same next-gen iPhone has both CDMA and GSM capabilities, which is pretty much in line with previous rumors.
Sure the iOS app developer asked not to be named and we have no idea what application we’re talking about but I think this sort of rumor is pretty believable. Final confirmation of the next iPhone’s “World Phone” capabilities will only arrive in a few weeks, once Apple announces its new smartphone(s).
This report also suggests that, almost certainly, the iPhone 5 will lack 4G LTE capabilities, which, truth be told, is something that we were already expecting. Apple is less likely to jump on the LTE bandwagon until certain requirements are met when it comes to both LTE coverage, in the USA and internationally but also to LTE chipset design, a smartphone part that still needs improving, according to previous Apple statements.
We have no idea whether both the iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4S would come with dual-mode support, although it would make plenty of sense to see Apple include dual-mode CDMA/GSM in all mobile devices from now onwards. What new iPhone would you rather buy, an entry-level iPhone 4S or a high-end iPhone 5 (vote in our poll here)?
