Anonymous Denies Operation Facebook
The news about hacker collective Anonymous breaking into Facebook on November 5 caused a ripple among the social networking site’s users. People went as far as to research for ways to back-up Facebook data. (Is anybody surprised here? We all know how some people are Facebook-obsessed.) But while the warning message was really created by a member of the group, it seems Operation Facebook was a project long dropped.

Operation Facebook started out on an IRC chat by Anonymous members, led by someone called Speakeasy. Their goal is to bring awareness to everyone that Facebook stores your data even after you delete your account. But somewhere along the way, the members behind it got bored, and abandoned the project. So why was it suddenly picked up by the media recently? It seems another group of Anonymous stumbled upon that same chatroom, and decided to resurrect the project.
Unlike the old Operation Facebook that only aimed to inform people, the new one seems to be pushing for results that got Speakeasy worried. He says,
Even if it succeeded, Facebook has a lot of users, and we want to help people, not hurt them.
In the end, everything points to Operation Facebook going through on November 5. Who actually carries it out is irrelevant.
