Sony Casts White Magic On LCD To Improve Energy Efficiency
After full touchscreen smartphones came tablets – it seems screens have become larger and larger in the past few years. The larger the display, the more battery the device uses. To be fair, a lot of tablets today are energy efficient. But Sony‘s new WhiteMagic display could lower power consumption even more for longer battery life. |

Sony added a white pixel to the more conventional RGB display to enhance the screen’s natural brightness. This allows usage of a low power mode that consumes 50% less backlighting without sacrificing much of the brightness. According to Sony, adding white pixel usually leads to loss in image quality, but Sony’s proprietary technology prevents that from happening. Aside from a low power mode, the display also has an outdoors mode that doubles the screen’s brightness (without adding to power consumption, mind you) to lessen glare. That means you can see what’s going on your screen even when it’s bright outside.

We can probably expect this new screen technology on Sony-branded devices. But it seems the company is open to and keen on having other brands use it.
