Samsung Unveils The Galaxy Xcover, A Rugged Android Smartphone

Samsung Galaxy Xcover Announced For Germany, Will Bring A Rugged Exterior Design, 3.65" Display & Android 2.3 Gingerbread

It looks like Samsung has added to their existing Xcover lineup of handsets. Though, this latest is certainly a bit different as compared to some of the models that we have seen in the past. Bottom line, it looks like Samsung has kept to the Xcover line as being rugged but have moved from the candybar styling to smartphones.

Yup, the latest handset is the Samsung Galaxy Xcover and it has arrived as a ruggedized Android smartphone. More specifically, it has arrived with an IP67 certification which means it should be safe against dust, dirt, water and accidental drops. The display measures in at 3.65 inches and similar to the rugged casing, the display is made of scratch-resistant tempered glass.

Other specs on the Galaxy Xcover include the usual array such as HSUPA 7.2Mbps network support, Wi-Fi, GPS and a 3.2 megapixel camera that has an LED flash which is able to double as a flashlight. In terms of Android, the Galaxy Xcover is running Gingerbread version 3.2.

Moving past that and we come to the pricing and the availability. Samsung has remained quiet in terms of the pricing and at the moment and the availability is not all that widespread. In fact, as of this announcement, Samsung has only specified one area that will have the handset available — Germany. With that, the Galaxy Xcover is expected to come available for those in Germany this October.

All said and done, this is certainly looking like it will not be the highest spec’d Android device to come available. But that being said, we suspect those looking for a rugged design may not care as much. Of course, in the end, like many other handsets — the one make or break item can be the price and as of now we have yet to see what this will land at.
