Seagate Brings Out The GoFlex Turbo External Hard Drive
The external hard drive is one of the fastest ways to add a hefty chunk of storage to your computer for a relatively low cost, not to mention give you a great way to keep all your documents and the like well backed up. And the folks out at Seagate are looking to give you another way to do exactly that with their new GoFlex Turbo external hard drive.

The GoFlex Turbo (which, if space is a consideration for you, reportedly ranks between the Slim and the Satellite in terms of size) offers up a USB 3.0 port for extra-fast file transfers, as well as support for eSATA and FireWire 800 connections as well. Naturally, it will play equally nicely with Windows and OS X machines, and will come in your choice of 500 gig or 750 gig flavors running at 7200 RPM.
Word is that these got between 30 and 40 MBps transfer rates on USB 2.0, which isn’t half bad, but if all that isn’t good enough for you, you may want to know about the extra free offer. GoFlex Turbo drives will ship, for the first time, with two free years of SafetyNet, a system that gives you one free data recovery if something goes wrong with the drive in the two years you have it.
Sounds pretty good to me, I’d say, and the prices aren’t too far out of line considering you’ll get free bonuses and the USB 3.0 connectivity. The 500 gig model will sell for $119.99, and its larger counterpart, the 750 gig, will sell at $139.99.
Objectively, they’re a bit pricey–a moment with Sunday’s Best Buy circular in my local paper detailed a 1.5 terabyte model for $10 less than the 750 gig, and this a GoFlex FreeAgent with USB 3.0 to boot–but that SafetyNet access is a bit compelling in its own right.
So what do you guys think? Is the added SafetyNet worth the extra cost you’ll pay for a GoFlex Turbo? Or can you do better with a variety of other choices? The comments section awaits below, so head on down and tell us what you think!
