Apple Releases Sub-$1000 iMac For Education Customers
Apple rolled out their latest in terms of the iMac back in early May and while that release was somewhat expected — it looks like they have surprised us all be quietly releasing one more configuration of the iMac. This latest comes bearing a price tag just shy of $1000 and it is intended for education customers.

And of course, by just shy of, we mean $999 which some will likely remember is $100 higher as compared to the last iMac that Apple released for the education market. Either way though, the current model is $999 and the iMac is slightly less powerful and has a bit less in terms of storage space and RAM as compared to the regular line.
The specs for the education iMac include a 21.5 inch display, a dual-core 3.1GHz Intel Core i3 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 250GB (7200 RPM) hard drive. Other specs include AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics with 256MB GDDR5 memory, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Ethernet, 8x SuperDrive and the usual array of ports to include a Mini DisplayPort, Firewire 800, four USB 2.0, SDXC memory card, headphone in, microphone out, webcam and built-in stereo speakers.

All said and done, while this model may be a bit of a drop as compared to the low-end iMac for all customers, its probably still more than enough for most users. That being said, if you are looking for a lower priced iMac and not liking this model or not eligible for an education offer — you may want to consider something refurbished.
Sure, that word will turn some off, however I can say from personal experience as I have done it more than a few times, but Apple tends to offer solid deals as refurbished items. And just as an example, they currently have a 21.5 inch iMac (from mid-2010) for $929 with specs to include a 500GB hard drive, 4GB of RAM and a 3.06 Intel Core i3 processor.
