Amazon to Sell 3 Million Android Tablets This Year?
Will Amazon succeed where other Apple rivals have failed, at least so far? I’m talking about the tablet business of course, which is still an iPad-only affair. The Xoom, the Galaxy Tab 10.1, the G-Slate or the Flyer are some impressive iPad alternatives produced by the most important Android device makers out there, Motorola, Samsung, LG or HTC, respectively, but none of those devices managed to actually put pressure on Apple.

The iPad 2 has no rival, when it comes to sales, at least not yet, and we’re already in August. The question is, will any other tablet be able to snatch market share from the iPad? A recent report suggests that Amazon has big plans for the smartphone business, but while the retailer can certainly be commended for the impressive number of Kindle sales, the tablet business is a different field.
Amazon is said to have ordered 800,000 to 1 million Android units per month from August through October and it’s Quanta Computer the company that’s building the unannounced tablet for the giant retailer. That means Amazon is making at least 3 million tablets, if not more, which it probably plans to sell by the end of the year. Will Amazon succeed where others failed? And we can also include in the list of tablets mentioned above the non-Android PlayBook and TouchPad, as RIM’s and HP’s creations have also failed to really impress the crowds and therefore we’re yet to see consistent sales reports from any tablet manufacturer other than Apple.
According to CENS, Amazon’s tablets are cheaper, which is something we could have already guessed, considering the Kindle price-cutting policy we’ve witnessed in the last few years:
Accordingly, Amazon`s tablet PC features simpler technical specifications than competing models on the market and hence is cost efficient, reflecting the newcomer`s ambition to quickly gain a huge consumer base in the competitive landscape with budget-priced hardware and steadily carve out big profits with application software.
Should we understand that Amazon’s Android tablets would not be high-end devices when compared with the Xoom, the Galaxy Tab or any of the other flagship Honeycomb tablets? Is Amazon ready to undercut Apple’s iPad pricing and offer cheap tablets to the crowds? Well, stick around folks, as we’re going to find out the answers to all these questions as soon as Amazon makes its tablets official!
