HTC Thunderbolt Gingerbread Coming In Q3, Scout’s Honor!

HTC Rep Says Android 2.3 Is Coming to the Thunderbolt in Q3; We’ve Seen This Drama Before

The Thunderbolt, one of the hottest devices of the year (here’s our review), and definitely one of the most delayed smartphones of 2011, is still running Android Froyo. Yes, you’ll say, the majority of Android smartphones have not been upgraded to Android 2.3, but we expected this LTE beast to be among the first handsets to receive that Gingerbread build you crave for.

We’ve seen plenty of reports, most of them based on communication certain Thunderbolt users had with HTC representatives, say that the handset will be upgraded to Android 2.3 by the end of the second quarter of the year, and we’re now well into Q3 without any trace of Gingerbread available for the device.

Today we have a new reassuring passage for you, extracted from yet another HTC response to a disgruntled Thunderbolt owner, which basically says the Gingerbread update is coming this quarter:

…We will certainly pass along your concerns to the developers at HTC. We are working hard to address the issues you have mentioned with future updates for the device. We are excited to announce that the HTC Thunderbolt will receive the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) update in Q3 2011. Stay tuned for details as we get closer to the update availability…

Naturally there’s no release date mentioned, so you’d better try HTC for yourself and see what they’ll say. And don’t forget to send a tip our way in case you get an actual launch date for the Thunderbolt’s Gingerbread upgrade.

But as always when looking at such responses, there are no guarantees, not to mention Verizon isn’t saying anything about it yet; and your Thunderbolt may very well end up not getting any trace of Android 2.3 anytime soon. We’ve seen this sort of things happen with other high-profile Android devices in the past, as updating handsets to Google’s latest Android OS version seems a rather daunting task for certain handsets.

It’s true we’ve seen this before with a projected date as of the end of June… specifically the 30th. They need to do more than just tell us. They just need to do it. More or less taunting us is rather pathetic and laughable. I think if anything then, their going to eventually do this with if they intend to with the release of Android Ice Cream Sandwich. The phone has been known to support it and not had any problems as well as using sense 3.0 it hasn’t had problems. They’re just taking their sweet time in trying to perfect the device. I hate that it’s taking them so long to do something that could’ve been done ages ago. Granted I do give them credit it would be one of the many smart phones running 4G on the verizon network that will receive the update. This is my first smartphone though but I have gotten the best use out of it. Skype is now available with video chat as well as netflix even without gingerbread so it’s good but now we need better battery management. I have stuck to switching my phone into 3G only since it doesn’t take up as much battery consumption. I am rather pissed though at companies getting rid of their “Unlimited Data” plans. I understand their reasoning about it but, it’s kind of also overcharging someone for 2GB which can be taken rather fast if it’s a corporate phone itself. I’m lucky that I did get grandfathered in before the cut off date.

The reason why the T-Bolt hasn’t gone to gingerbread is because Verizon’s bloatware is not compatible. Root your T-bolt and remove all of Verizon’s crap, run a Gingerbread rom, and have an overall better experience with your Thunderbolt

Sorry, you’re wrong there. Several Verizon Android phones have had Gingerbread for some time now, and I just got it on my Droid X2 a few days ago. With the dual core processor now supported in the OS, the X2 is a speed demon, faster than any other Android phone I’ve ever seen or used.
