Microsoft Windows XP Shares Drop Below 50%

Net Applications Study Says Windows XP Not A Majority Choice Anymore

July data from Web measurement company Net Applications reveals that Microsoft‘s Windows XP had a 1.3% usage drop from June, bringing total user percentage down to 49.8%. According to Net Applications, XP still reigns supreme when it comes to Windows machines, but it could no longer be called choice of the majority.

While this might seem like a blow to Microsoft at face value, this could actually mean otherwise. Microsoft has been promoting Windows 7 since its inception, and has been campaigning for users to upgrade from XP for a while now. This is due to Microsoft’s decision to stop supporting the Windows XP platform by April 2014. Microsoft’s efforts might actually be paying off. Corresponding data from Net Applications that says Windows 7′s shares climbed to 27.9% this July (just a tad higher than its percentage share for June) supports this belief.
