Nokia N9 Hitting Orange UK in September But It’s Mango Nokias We Want Now

The Swiss to Get Nokia N9 “Lankku” Smartphone Soon, Does Anyone Care For MeeGo Right Now?

Nokia released its latest smartphone recently, the N9 also known as Lankku. Surprisingly, for everyone, especially those people that know there’s no plan B for Nokia if Windows Phone 7 fails, the N9 is a MeeGo device. Nokia’s first, and one of the very few ones to run this particular OS. Should people really be excited the Lankku is coming soon?

The UK is getting the N9 in August and following that it would appear the Lankku would go to Switzerland (also) next month. We’re definitely interested to see how this baby will sell, especially considering that in the following months not only will we see the iPhone 4S/5 get official but we’re also going to get the first Windows Phone 7.5 Mango devices in stores, hopefully including that Nokia Sea Ray we spotted a few weeks ago.

The Swiss arm of Orange will start selling the N9 on September 15, for an undisclosed yet price. Therefore you have a little over six weeks to decide whether you want to invest time and money into a mobile platform that, even if it looks very enticing, it’s pretty much dead on arrival from Nokia’s point of view. The phone however looks great and it may be one of the best Nokia designs we’ve seen yet. I’m inclined to believe in fact that the ghost of the N9 will haunt us in future Windows Phone 7 Nokia handsets, not that this new design direction is a bad one for the Finnish company.

The N9 will offer you some interesting specs and features: a 3.9-inch AMOLED touchscreen curved display with qHD resolution, 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera with HD video recording, 1GHz processor, GPS, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microSD support, 16 or 64GB of internal memory and MeeGo under the hood. It definitely looks like a great setup and I’m liking the design. But while the former Nokia fan in me would be thrilled to play with this baby when it’ll be available in stores, I know better than to commit into a relationship with an mobile OS that has no future. Anyone else not exactly thrilled to buy the N9?

I don’t get all these “dead on arrival” complaints. Sure, nokia might not make any more devices using meego but the remember what companies stand behind meego even if nokia leaves: Intel, BMW, Asus, Acer, EA Mobile etc. There are lots of economic power behind this platform and we are going to see a lot of momentum for it, both with the n9 and with many intel-powered phones as well.

Not to mention that even if Elop have said there’s no future for it, that doesn’t mean he is right. Elop has a position in the company where his purpose is to increase it’s wealth. If the phone ends up being one of the biggest hits nokia ever had, I find it hard to believe the board of members he answers to will allow him to just drop it. That said, there’s also talks and rumours about having the meego developed and stored away while they try it with windows, and then use it as a “future disruption” if needed too.
