Samsung Doesn’t Report Galaxy S II & Galaxy Tab 10.1 Numbers Because It’s Afraid of Apple

Samsung’s Quarterly Earnings Are Down Year Over Year & The Company Is Shy About Revealing Mobile Performance]

We’ve looked at Apple’s, Microsoft’s and Motorola’s quarterly earnings reports, to name just a few of the most important companies out there, in the mobile game and not only, and now it’s time to see what Samsung did, financially speaking, during the past quarter.

The company announced impressive results, but it raked in less cash than last year. Before we’ll look at the numbers we’ll note that Samsung hasn’t revealed its actual performance in the smartphone and tablet business, which is one of the most interesting technology niches we’re following, and that’s despite the impressive growth expected from Samsung for the quarter ending in June. Various analysts even suggested that Apple may be surpassed by Samsung, when it comes to the total number of smartphone sold, although that hasn’t happened. And if it did, Samsung isn’t telling:

“As competition intensifies, there are increased risks that the information we provide may adversely affect our own businesses.” said Robert Yi, Samsung’s own Chief of Investor Relations.

No matter how you look at it Samsung is afraid of Apple. The official response, as you can see above is that the company will not reveal the actual number of smartphone and tablet sales. Why? Because the company is currently involved in a serious legal battle with Apple. Therefore it’s afraid of Apple. The unofficial reason may be an entirely different one: Samsung doesn’t have any mobile flagship device as powerful as Apple’s. The Samsung Galaxy S II is a strong player, it just sold in 5 million units in worldwide markets, but Apple sold 20 million iPhones, most of them iPhone 4s. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 has even less to show for itself compared to Apple’s 9.25 million iPads sold by Apple during the last quarter. Therefore Samsung, a company that it’s second to none (remember the Nexus Two S name choice?) can’t tell the world it did so much worse than Apple, can it? Just like Microsoft is keeping quiet on the total number of Windows Phone 7 handsets sold to date. Therefore Samsung is afraid of Apple! Anyone care to disagree?

Now let’s check out the boring numbers Samsung does provide:

  • 39.44 trillion Korean won* ($37.4 billion) revenue – 4% increase year over year
  • 3.51 trillion won ($3.33 billion) – 18% decrease year over year
  • 3.75 trillion won – consolidated operating profit
  • 43% growth in the Telecommunications segment – strong Galaxy S II sales mentioned, but without a number
  • 12.19 trillion won ($11.56 billion) revenue in the Telecommunications segment
  • 1.67 trillion won ($1.58 billion) profit in the Telecommunications segment
  • operating profit declined due to “reduced margins in the Semiconductor and Display Panel businesses”
  • 9.6 trillion won revenue in the Semiconductor business – 4% decrease year over year
  • 1.79 trillion won revenue in the Semiconductor business (down from 2.94 billion in the previous year)
  • 5.89 trillion won revenue in the Memory Business – 12% decrease year over year
