Jolicloud Surpasses The 500,000 User Milestone, Thanks Everyone & A Offers A Look At What Is To Come [Jolicloud Teases Us With The Cloud Companion, An HTML5 Compatible Offering For iOS & Android Devices]

If you are looking for a cloud based operating system and not in the mood to purchase a shiny new Chromebook, you may want to consider the alternative — Joli OS. Which for those not as familiar, this operating system was originally built to run on netbooks and later made the move to support all systems, including those that are older and not all that powerful.

In short, Joli OS, formerly known as Jolicloud, is a lightweight operating system that seems to run great on a wide variety of hardware that allows users to live mostly in the cloud. And sure, its probably a bit more technical than that, but the ease of use is what most people will probably see. Or more accurate, what most people would be happy to experience. Nonetheless, I have long been using (and offering my praise and support) for Jolicloud and remain a big fan to this day.

Anyway, before my love of Jolicloud makes me stray any further off track, lets shift this back to where it should be — on the current good news shared by Tariq Krim, who is the CEO of Jolicloud.

According to the details he recently wrote about, they have supposed the 500,000 user milestone. And of those half a million users;

  • 18% of our users even installed it on two machines or more.
  • 130K users installed Jolicloud as a Chrome app to access their desktop, making it the fastest non game app to reach the top 20.

And as for the teaser, it looks like something is in the works for Android and iOS devices. Krim notes that “people are not loyal to devices, but they are loyal to brands they respect. And it’s our job to address all the devices they will use. ” Going on to state that;

“This is why for the last 4 months we have been working on building a whole new category of service. We call it internally “the cloud companion” and we are already using the product internally.

We will release it this fall and it will be available as an app on iOS, Android and of course in HTML5.”

And while we are still wondering exactly what we will see, somehow we are envisioning this along the lines of how you an access your Joli OS desktop from the web or from a Chrome web app. Of course, we look forward to seeing what it will be once it comes available, and some lucky users will get access to a private beta this summer.

Lastly, while some may wonder why you would want to run the Joli OS, (and because I cannot disagree with any that Krim listed) here are the six that he noted;

  • Simple installation
  • Great choice of apps and services
  • Freedom to do what they want (unlike Chrome OS, people can use their hard drive and add applications like Skype)
  • No learning curve (as easy as an iPhone)
  • Reliable (especially the very reactive support on Twitter and Facebook)
  • Open source
