Gmail Android App Updated With Better Priority Inbox Feature & Custom Label Ringtones

Google Updates Android Gmail App to 2.3.5; Can Now Sync Just Important Messages to Save Space, Bandwidth & Battery

Email is considered as the most-used application by smartphone users. But with tons of email arriving in your inbox, your phone might be wasting a lot of bandwidth downloading unimportant mail while on the go. The latest Gmail for Android addresses this with an important-only syncing capability.

Google has recently released the 2.3.5 update  to the Android Gmail application, adding a handful of organization features that will make syncing email more convenient. Major updates are as follows:

  • Sync only important mail – Gmail can be setup to sync only important messages, which can help save on bandwidth and battery life, not to mention your precious time when sifting through emails. This works with the Priority Inbox feature already present in older Gmail for Android versions (but which still syncs all mail instead of just the important ones).
  • Label-based notification tone - You can now define an alert tone for each label. This way, you can know just exactly what kind of messages you receive (based on sender, subject, account, and the like) without even looking at your phone.
  • Turn off sticky message actions – This feature, since present in the FroYo version of Gmail, can sometimes be constricting especially for phones with limited screen real estate. Sticky message actions like reply, star and forward can now be deactivated.
  • Display images preference – The Gmail app will now remember if you want to display images from a particular sender or not. This can come in useful if you’re expecting image-based emails or attachments and you’re accessing emails offline.

The latest version of Gmail for Android is now available via Android Market. 2.3.5 will either update to smartphone or tablet‘s system app (if you’re still using the stock Gmail), or replace any updates already installed.
