Android “Sucks” According To Hip-Hop Star [Chamillionaire Tells Tech Conference & Android Developer That Android Phones Aren't Good, Google Hints At Better Android Phone Coming]

Who do you turn to when looking for mobile phone advice? Your friend? The guy at the Verizon store? Us? How about hip-hop star Chamillionaire? The platinum recording artist has becoming an increasingly more common figure at tech conferences, and at TechCrunch’s Mobile First CrunchUp, he said, in front of an audience and on stage with Google Android designer Matias Duarte that Android phones “suck”.

According to a post on TechCrunch by (iPhone loving writer) MG Siegler, the rapper stood up during the final panel and declared his love for the iPhone and bashed Android, pleading with Matias Duarte, Android User Experience Director at Google, to make good devices. According to Siegler’s piece, Chamillionaire said:

I’ve used all these different devices — they suck.

Google’s Duarte refused to be disturbed by the comment. Instead, he praised Apple, saying that they have a good product, and also mentioned the quality of Windows Phone 7 and webOS. Duarte went to say that folks have different tastes, before hinting at a future device yet to come. Duarte allegedly said:

I’m hoping that pretty soon we’re gonna have an android phone you’re gonna love.

Was Duarte talking about how he hopes that Chamillionaire becomes a fan of Android in general, or was he talking about a specific upcoming Android device that he thinks will appeal to the star? We’ll let you decide that one.

What do you think about Chamillionaire’s comments? Does Android suck compared to the iPhone? Or should Chamillionaire stick to the hip-hop? Tell us your take on this surely controversial statement in the comments section.

Yeah, like I’m going to listen to a poorly-educated rapper to help me choose a phone, especially one who things “bling” is the best thing in the world. No wonder he’s a Apple fan, and knows what Steve Jobs’ buttcheeks taste like. Apple hides its lack of functionality under a shiny UI.

    • LMT

As opposed to listening to someone who can’t spell?

      • SeriousNDP

In all actuality Chamillionair has a point about maybe older android devices, BUT, “Android Fan” Has a point as well. Apple iPhone has minimal functionality, though it is battery efficient only because it simply does NOT do what other non-apple devices can. Why should I have to “jailbreak” my phone just to be able to change the look of my phone. Apple iOS hasn’t changed much since the first device has come out many years ago.

Apple to me is not worth the money. Expensive devices that aren’t any better than any other device. $1,600 – $2,000 for a laptop? PLEAAASE!!!!

        • Reiden Uses Ubuntu

The last time I checked, people bought a device to use it for applications to get work done. Not to change how it looks and have a sexy customized device.

“Apple iPhone has minimal functionality, though it is battery efficient only because it simply does NOT do what other non-apple devices can.”

Please show me all the Android Studio software that gives me virtual software synths, 16-stereo-channel mixer, 2 stereo aux sends, 4 insert effects per channel, MIDI in/out, full-fledged sequencer, all with 6 ms latency, and then we’ll talk again.

  • William

iOS is like a jail, you have to use apple product to do whatever you want. You can’t pass files via bluetooth, the restrictions in apps for iphone are huge in other countries than us. Android otherwise, is pretty maleable, you can do with it, litteraly whatever you want to do. So im not buying any apple phone.

  • not buying it

Yeah this story couldn’t really be any less relevant. It has an “april fool’s” or “Simpsons”-esque surreality to it.

Is he even really a “star”?

    Think before you answer.

    Really?

    • SeriousNDP

Chamillionair is an over glorified artist with one song that filtered down to the people who barely listen to hip-hop with a catchy hook… His newest album came out when????

Chamillionair’s opinion on anything isn’t worth anything and his taste is as bad as his name alone.

  • Chamillionaire-who?

What an ass-clown. I would like to stand up and plead with him to shut up and leave hip hop to Jay Z and the Beastie Boys and other rappers with talent.

    • Chamilli-who?

      Dude u nailed….just that…nuf said.

  • 33

IPhones for idiots… he makes that statement true.

  • abranton101

who cares what Chamillionaire thinks? like William (above) said: iOS is jail and restricted through apple and certain wireless providers…..while android is everywhere, more features, fully customizable, 1000s and 1000s of apps, 3D *don’t care much for 3D, but nonetheless it’s a new feature in a few *Android phones, expandable space/memory through SD Cards, and much more!

What a clown. Drinking the Apple Cool-Aide. I’m original, and like to customize my device to suit my needs. Not scroll through a bunch of tiny squares with no way to go back on an App or browser. What a douche. And this guy’s last hit record was when???? He’s not even relevent in the rap community anymore. One hit wonder….

    • chamillionaire fan

Ha, maybe you should shut the hell up and listen to his stuff he’s not mainstream no more underground is what he’s doing now and destroying every rapper out there

  • rapper

Nice one; he fits the apple fanboy stereo type perfectly

  • AndroidDoes

Does your phone glitch, freeze, have burn-ins on screen, share & advertise all your information w 3rd party vendors, all apps are approved even apps that cause your phone to freeze plus no support from google, require a hard reset on your phone at least once a month, no built-in user guide on phone, requires “self help” support aka ask your “I know everything” grandchild w/ condescending tone support, zero battery life, or buy a de-valued “hey, I just got this 3 months ago” outdated “I might get a software update to “Jelly Doughnut” if Google/Hardware manufacture feels like it” phone?

That’s right, Android does. You guys are right, this is totally the phone for me. Google is definitely not evil.

  • sum1

Actors are the new politicians, now second-rate rappers are the new tech gurus…really?

    • Reiden Uses Ubuntu

Well, he was responding mostly as a consumer. The truth is, only 1% of people using their phones will be geeks that want a geek device. The other 99% are looking for an easy, useful device with lots of applications and software choices to get stuff done. And with the iPhone and Apple ecosystem, you have hardware that is always supported by Apple, the apps are safe and trusted because of Apple’s moderation, and it’s a friendly device with a friendly interface.

Now tell me what android has. Just about everything that tries to be an iPhone with lots of geek features and little to no app moderation. When something goes wrong, where do you go? who do you turn to? Google? Nope. Verizon? Nope. Find the people that made the hardware, and they’ll tell you it’s a software problem. Too bad you can’t go to Google’s HQ and get all your problems fixed there.

  • Will

Thank you “AndroidDoes” for that comment. I agree absolutely. And I agree with Chamillionaire too. I’ve tried Android phones, iPhone and Windows Phone, and yes Android does suck. I fix and build computers so I’m not some beginner user that doesn’t know how to use an Android phone. They’re glitchy, they freeze, they’re slow. Google doesn’t even care about customer service. I feel sorry for the Hardware manufacturers that give these phones awesome specs but they’re bogged down by crappy Android software. These phones have the worst user experience ever. I’ve had instances where I’ve used an Android phone with Google Maps and told it to locate me and it can’t find me then I’ll use an iPhone right next to it and tell Google Maps to find me and it finds me instantly. Why is that? I can’t wait until iPhone 5 comes out to get rid of my Android.

  • johnny

chamillionaire is underground!!! just cause u mainstream coloful wearing fools dont see him on tv or hear him on the radio does not make him a one hit wonder. I bet you listen to wack young money and gay z.

  • John

You can’t call someone a star unless they are. I’ve listened to this clowns so called music and he is the definition of “sucks”

  • anon

I agree with androiddoes and chamillionaire. Some us have no desire to be beta testers for Google. I have owned Android devices and now am on windows phone and could not be any happier.

I am not some tech illiterate either, I am a network admin. I just don’t have the time or effort to mess with my god damned phone to make sure it is working or performing properly. My phone is an appliance not unlike a washing machine or stove, it has to work when I need it to.

Needing to root and put a rom on first thing out of the box does not sound very appliance-like to me. If my washing machine needed to be “broken into” and “hack” a third party firmware onto it before it would do what i bought for, it will be going back to be returned.

    Just like my Android phone

  • Jeremy

When a parody of your song is more popular then your song, your not a star. I would guess he is not good with computers and the iphone’s “Leap Frog – My first phone” OS is perfect for him. He probably has two so when the battery dies on one phone he can just turn on the other one. Learning how to change a battery would to much for his brain to handle.

  • Siddharth Bansal

So he’s saying iPhone 4 is better than phones like Samsung Galaxy S2,Htc Sensation, LG Optimus? Now i know why he’s a rapstar.

  • agnostic

Given the head start iOS has over other smart phones, it is no wonder they are the ‘better’ phone… if you like buying a jail break phone and having only one source in the universe for your software, Apple rocks. Of course, today there are a few more apps for iOS – most of them suck. Yes, Android sucks too – and WIndows 7, WebOS – come on! in reality, Android is going to eat iOS lunch… here’s one example why: Apple decided to prevent in-app billing, Sorry if you are a consumer or merchant and want to join mobile e-commerce world – you are stuck on Apple. Either use a Mobile Web app, or use your computer, but iOS will not help you. And, don’t think jail phones and lack of e-commerce solutions will deter Apple. They will continue down their road and collapse much as they did ten years ago, when Bill Gates had to write a big fat check to Apple just to keep them in business. Time is Apple’s enemy. Google is no hero, but Android is your friend.

  • Todd

Android needs to get a freakin’ DRM standard in place. Android is nice and all but people are starting to get tired of asking when Netflix or similar will be supported seamlessly across all their phones and tablets. This hodge podge of maybe this feature will work on this given Android device or maybe it won’t sh*t is getting old fast. Bad enough you have to deal with this nonsense on most Linux distros for the PC.

  • Jorge

It’s true. Android does suck. I have been obsessing over my new Nexus S 4G after years of Blackberry use. Native apps on the Blackberry and integration are superior to what I have seen on Android. I am blown away that I can’t integrate Tasks in the Calendar… Can’t transfer my memos….can’t add birthdays and groups in contacts…where is the activity log for each contact…come on!!! this is a mediaphone, not a smartphone.

  • LG

I totally agree that androids suck big time. At first I was laughing at my bf after he bought his oh so shiny iPhone4. I said iPhones are for trolls who just want to flash their toys with a hefty price tag to boot. If you are really practical, get an android device for like 1/5 the price tag with almost the same functionality and even much more. So to prove that I’m right, I bought the cheapest android phone around.

What a disgrace! I can’t text on it, the screen is just not functioning as expected, it lags, you need to go through too many settings to fix things, batt drains too fast, my other phones can detect my sim and update phone settings so I can immediately use the internet with android I had to manually input settings, it takes up valuable time just to make sure it works well, it hangs and I need to use the taskiller every so often and clear the cache. I had to call the phone tech support or google all the time just to know how the features work. It’s no fun.

After a week, I sold it to some poor douchebag who thinks android is greater than iPhone and I bought my iPhone4. I am very sure he will realize what I know know after a week, but no point arguing. Experience is the best teacher. Now I’m happier more than ever.

I posted this on my Mac. Its not as fast as my PC, but I love it.

  • Appleman

Yeah, sure, get Android. If you want something with zero security, crappy hardware, and only access to crappy apps. Read the biography of Steve Jobs and you will see why iPhone is better. The guys who brought Android into being are only concerned with how much money they can make. If you don’t believe me, then look at how many phones run some crappy Android OS. Apple will always be better. The pricing simply reflects the awesomeness of the product.

Android sucks. iOS is a great product. Get used to it.

  • jo3

I have a droid x and this piece or shit needs the battery pulled multiple times a day. It always shuts off when I use media applications. I like android and I blame my gripes on the hardware. The customization with android is great. The phone makers are bastardizing android so experience is not consistent among devices. What version of android are you running, will you get the next update? The majority of android phones out there will never see ICS. The consumers are losing. I don’t like how apple locks iphone down but at the end of the day people want a device that simply works without hassles. I miss my iphone but I’m not going back. Apple has to play catch up with the top tier android devices currently available. Android offers freedom, flexibility, and features. Can somebody please photoshop that necklace so the rapper is holding a diamond android guy instead of a lizard?

Who the hell is chamillionaire? Never heard of this name before. My first impression is a charmander from pokemon flamming Android. O!relli. You know, any negative remarks on android is very much welcomed in the world of the modding community. Things are fixed almost immediately once the issues been brought up to the avid modders. We the end users gain as a result. this in turns made Android a favourite among converters and new comers. I play dota. Am sure some of you play too. I host games, and I do not boot people based on their levels. I simple asked who are using ios. Those who use I will kick. Why? Because most of them are noobs, leavers and feeders. I have been doing a survey on the relationship between dota skills and mobile phone choice. At first I was surprised why ios users trends to sucked in dota but finally found a logic. They cannot react fast in games when new changes emerge, they hardly can fix any problem when they run into one, they trend to be impatient when they lag or die. My conclusion is, don’t let technology babysit you so much that until the real time comes, you cannot adapt. Simply put, an Android users suddenly convert to ios will learn everything about the phone in a few minutes but an ios users converting to android takes longer or never to discover the hidden features. During this coming period, if he can’t learn, like this charmander, he obviously will say android sucks.

So, a guy that dresses in bright colors, uses about five kilograms of jewelry, and makes primitive, simplistic, unimaginative music can’t construct an actual constructive criticism or provide any basis for his claims, and so just says that something “sucks”, is taken seriously why exactly?

Yes, Android has its shortcomings, but considering it’s the only serious, relatively mature, and actively developed Mobile OS out there that is also free software, and that right now it has the biggest marketshare on smartphones, we should just deal with it and help improve it.
