Android Claims Top Spot On OS Rankings; Apple Reigns Supreme Over Smartphone Manufacturers

Nielsen Study Says Apple & Android Top The Smartphone Market On Two Different Aspects

Nielsen has an answer for all those who’ve been wondering which between Android and Apple is doing better in the smartphone market. According to Nielsen, both are perched right on top of the ranks, but on two different aspects of the market.

Google Android, as an operating system, now has the largest share – an impressive 39%, in fact – of the smartphone market in the United States. In comparison, Apple’s iOS (which comes next in line) only has a 28% share. However, as Apple remains the sole manufacturer of iOS devices, it’s also the market’s top hardware manufacturer. RIM’s BlackBerry OS comes after the two, with a 20% share of the OS market. But although this might indicate that RIM is doing well, recent news suggests otherwise.

At the bottom of the pile is Nokia’s Symbian operating system that’s facing the axe within five years. It’s also worth noting that Windows Mobile 7 OS only has a 9% share. It will be interesting to see if WP7 Mango could help ratchet up interest on the operating system.
