Sony PRS-T1 Makes Contact With The FCC
It was just a couple weeks ago when we first heard the initial stirrings that a new lineup of Sony Reader products may be making their way to our shelves at some point soon. And though Sony proper expressed vague and noncommittal support to its product line, not many specifics were offered in response. But now reports have emerged that the new lineup of Readers–or at least one of them–may be in the FCC’s hands right this second.

What we know about the PRS-T1 is still somewhat shaky: based on the findings out of the FCC, we know the device’s designation, and we know that it’s got wi-fi involved. Some have surmised that the “T1″ indicates that this will be a touch screen device, and that’s a fair guess given that we’re talking about an ereader here.
But everything else is still somewhat shaky. Screen size (there is still an as yet non-disproven rumor that says this will pack an e-ink display), storage, any extra features, if it can run Android…all of these things are blanks right now. Though since it’s actually made it into FCC hands, the chances that it won’t actually go on sale at some point seem to be pretty low. It’s possible, but still low.
Earlier reports suggest that this may be making it to stores at some point in August, though again, these may not be the case. But since FCC clearance was involved here, it does put some extra credence to the concept.
So what do you guys think here? Looking forward to seeing a fine chunk of Sony’s latest and greatest in terms of ereaders? Or do you think the ereader is a product on its way out thanks to the growing development of smartphones and tablets, and this is just a pricey boondoggle for Sony? Either way, we want to know what you think, so head on down to the comments section and tell us what you think!

I much prefer reading from an e-ink screen. So I’m all for the ereader.
And whereas Sony readers are great, I think the compoany could be much more communicative about specs and launch dates.
Ad–that’s very true. They’ve been frantically denying this thing even exists for weeks now, and here it is coming out of the FCC.
