Ion Piano Apprentice Lets You Turn Your iPad Into A Teaching Piano [Play Piano & Learn Piano At Once With The Piano Apprentice]

I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to play piano on an iDevice before–I’ve tried it with my iPod Touch, and it’s great, assuming you don’t want access to the whole keyboard in rapid fashion as you’ll have to scroll to the next octave while playing–but it can be a bit of a cumbersome experience. Those of you who still want to try with your iPad, though, will find a great friend in the upcoming launch of the Piano Apprentice from the folks at Ion Audio.

It’s a stunningly simple idea: just take your iPad, insert it in the Piano Apprentice unit like a piece of sheet music, plug it in at the Dock Connector port and use the free app included. Now, you’ll not only get access to a series of lessons, but they will step it up a notch. See in the pic above how the Piano Apprentice is shaped like a big keyboard? Well, those keys contain LED lights that correspond to the lessons. So now, playing piano is just as simple as pressing the lit key in the proper interval and holding it down for the appropriate length of time.

And, since the Piano Apprentice is MIDI-compliant, you can actually use this with GarageBand if you’re so inclined.

There may be some purists out there who find themselves resenting that a grand art form like the piano has now been essentially reduced to a big game of Whack-a-Mole, but as far as I’m concerned, this is a great idea whose time has more than come. Piano lessons can be spectacularly pricey. The Piano Apprentice costs $100. Of course, that assumes you’ve already got an iPad, but still.

So what do you guys think of this? A fun and easy way to learn piano? Or an art-killing shortcut to discipline? Either way, head on down to the comments section and let us know just what you think of the Ion Piano Apprentice!
