Breaking: Motorola Droid Bionic Release Date Confirmed for September [Sanjay Jha Says Droid Bionic Will Hit Verizon In September Alone; Mentions $56 Million Loss in Q2 2011 In the Process]
It all started two days ago when we saw those contradicting leaked documents. Then, yesterday, we showed you another rumor claiming the Droid Bionic will only be released in September and not next week as initially expected. Today we have confirmation of that fact, coming all the way from Sanjay Jha, Motorola’s CEO.

The next LTE Android handset to hit Verizon stores, the Droid Bionic, will only arrive in early September and we’re expecting it to face some pretty tough times considering that not only is Samsung’s flagship handset, the Galaxy S II headed to the U.S., but, most importantly, that the iPhone 4S/5 will also be unveiled at some point in September.
We’re actually pretty surprised to hear that Sanjay Jha came at the company’s quarterly earnings call prepared to confirm the launch window of the phone but at least we’re done with eagerly waiting for each and every Droid Bionic rumor to confirm launch dates or pricing details for this highly-anticipated phone.
Since the main point of this earnings call was for Motorola to showcase its performance for the past quarter, and not to actually reveal Droid Bionic plans, here’s what Motorola did in Q2 2011:
• Net revenues of $3.3 billion, up 28 percent from second quarter 2010
• GAAP net loss of .19 per share compared to net earnings of .27 per share in second quarter 2010 (or a loss of $56 million)
• Non-GAAP earnings of .09 per share compared to .30 loss in second quarter 2010
• Mobile Devices revenues of $2.4 billion, up 41 percent from second quarter 2010; GAAP operating loss of $85 million; non-GAAP operating loss of $31 million
• Shipped 11.0 million mobile devices, including 4.4 million smartphones and 440,000 tablets
• Home revenues of $907 million, up 2 percent from second quarter 2010; GAAP operating earnings of $62 million; non-GAAP operating earnings of $90 million
Those numbers can’t be compared with Apple’s sales numbers in the mobile sector, but Motorola is still doing a lot better than it did before it adopted Android as its main mobile platform. And while Moto has a long way to go until it catches up with Apple, but also with its Android rivals, HTC or Samsung, phones like the Droid Bionic should certainly help its cause; if only they were released earlier!
Will you be waiting for the Droid Bionic or will you shop for a different smartphone?
