Big OLED Televisions At Least Three Years Out, Say Industry Figures
Interesting bit of news for those of you who, like me, happen to be home theater buffs. A fairly big name in the industry out at AU Optronics says that large OLED televisions won’t be feasible for another three years. This by itself is worthwhile to know, especially if you’re looking to make a television purchase any time soon, but when you plug it in to the wider scale of news, now you get an interesting little contradiction that bears closer examination.

First, a bit of rundown: a figure with AU Optronics recently put out the word that they thought that big OLED televisions was a few years out yet. It was a combination of factors that was behind it; not so much that it couldn’t be done, because it could, but that it couldn’t be done cheaply enough and rapidly enough to make them commercially viable. And their figure until they’d be ready to do so at a level that wouldn’t have you shelling out several grand for one assuming you could even find it? 2014 was the number they gave.
Now couple that on to recent reports currently swirling around the crew out at LG, who’s looking to wheel out a 55 inch OLED television by the middle of next year. This, of course, leads to an inevitable question: is it that AU Optronics just hasn’t figured it out while LG has, or that LG’s willing to accept the lack of economic viability to get a model on the shelves?
It’s definitely an interesting question, and leads one to wonder if LG’s projections may not be a bit too optimistic, or if AU Optronics’ may not be a bit too pessimistic? But as to which one is right, well, that’s a question we won’t figure out until 2012. Or maybe 2014.
Either way, though, we want to know what you think about all this: are either one of them right? If so, who, and of course, why? Are we going to see big OLED televisions hitting Best Buy and the like any time soon, or will we be sticking with regular LED for the foreseeable future?
