THQ Pulls The Plug On Red Faction Series
It looks like the sun is setting on Volition’s shooter series Red Faction, as THQ CEO Brian Farrell said during an investor’s call that the publisher is disappointed with the sales of Red Faction: Armageddon, and that they’re not planning to continue the series in “any meaningful way.”

“Given that that title, now in two successive versions, has just found a niche,” Farrell said, “we do not intend to carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way.”
THQ’s cancellation of the series can pretty much be pinned on the company’s Red Faction: Armageddon woes, and the fact that the series has always struggled to gain a foot hold against other shooter games like Call of Duty and Halo. Red Faction: Guerilla, the game that “rebooted” the series after Red Faction II, did pretty well with critics, with all versions scoring above an 80 on Metacritic. Armageddon, on the other hand, didn’t get such a warm reception – none of its different versions managed to leave the 70 range.
So, now that Red Faction is done (at least for the foreseeable future), what will happen to the team at Volition? Well besides finishing up Saint’s Row: The Third, Farrell says that they’re gearing up for the development of Guillermo del Toro’s game, Insane. While this is sad news for Red Faction fans, don’t fret too much – I wouldn’t be surprised to see Red Faction revisited later on down the road. It may take a number of years before the series pops back up in the news, but I doubt this is the last we hear from Red Faction.
