Samsung Galaxy S II Sold in 5 Million Units Worldwide; Coming in White Too [Galaxy S II Sales Reach 5 Million in 85 Days; LTE & WiMAX Models Already Rumored for U.S. Launch]]

The Galaxy S II, Samsung’s current Android flagship device, is selling more than well in international markets. The company announced that it has already sold more than 5 million Galaxy S II units in 85 days, which is an impressive performance for the company. Also worth noting is that a white Galaxy S II is rumored to hit stores, which may be another good reason for certain buyers to want this smartphone in the coming weeks.

Samsung’s goal for 2011 is to sell 10 million Galaxy S II units, but considering it has already reached the 5 million mark without any presence in the U.S. market, I think we’ll see the company surpass that 10 million mark a lot faster than initially expected. It’ll be interesting to see how the Galaxy S II will do against the iPhone 5, once the latter starts selling, but I’m sure Apple is already annoyed to see Samsung’s progress in the smartphone business and that Cupertino will certainly blame it all on the resemblance between Galaxy devices and its iconic iPhone.

As for U.S. customers, the Galaxy S II will be available with at least three of the Big Four carriers. AT&T will carry a special Galaxy S II version, one coming with a full QWERTY slide-out keyboard, but also a regular S II model (one of these two possibly called the Attain); Verizon will name its baby either the Fascinate II or the Function and the phone may or may not come with 4G LTE support while Sprint’s handset, rumored to be named the Within, has already been spotted at the FCC with WiMAX capabilities in tow. T-Mobile is still missing in action when it comes to Galaxy S II rumors and the carrier may not offer this device to its customer base.

What we still don’t know yet is when these handsets will be launched and how much they’ll cost once they hit U.S. stores. We would expect regular non-4G models to retail for $199.99 with new contracts while LTE- and/or WiMAX-enabled Galaxy S II versions could sell for either $249.99 or $299.99 when bundled with new two-year contracts. Of course we’re still waiting for Samsung and its U.S. carrier partners to properly announce the Galaxy S II, so stick around, folks, for more Galaxy S II coverage! And while you wait, let us know what kind of smartphone OS you favor (here’s our poll).
