Droid Bionic Release Date Pushed Back to September in Thunderbolt Delay Style?
Yesterday we looked at various leaked documents suggesting that the Droid Bionic could be launched as early as next week by Verizon, with Sam’s Club getting the LTE superphone at some point in September; or so we believed.
It seems now that there’s reason to believe Verizon will delay the launch of the Droid Bionic to September, with September 1 being the rumored release date now. This reminds us very much of the problematic launch of the Thunderbolt, the first LTE handset available from Verizon, which was, for one reason or another, delayed for weeks without a proper explanation.
Verizon has already put up a sign up page for the Droid Bionic, something we interpreted as a good sign when we spotted the page. But apparently Motorola is advising Verizon that the phone will only be available in “early September.”
I wonder if any of this has to do with the delayed launch of the iPhone 4S/5 or whether Moto is encountering certain technical difficulties. The iPhone 4S/5 will be announced in September, by most accounts, so would Motorola be making a wise choice launching the Droid Bionic at the same time? We’ll remind you that both AT&T and Verizon will get the new iPhone 4S/5 simultaneously and they’ll certainly dedicate plenty of marketing efforts to the new iPhone in town.
On the other hand, if there’s something technically wrong with the Droid Bionic, then I’m sure anyone would agree with a delayed launch as nobody wants to buy a brand new, and probably expensive, faulty Android handset. The problem here is that neither Verizon nor Motorola would announce anything official regarding the Droid Bionic yet, and therefore we’re left to battle with contradicting rumors on a regular basis.
Are you buying the new Motorola Droid Bionic or do you plan to choose a different smartphone later this year?
Update: Motorola’s Sanjay Jha confirmed the Droid Bionic will be available in stores only in September.

Thinking about getting the galaxy s2. Motorola is whack for not letting us know when this phone us going to arrive.
I’m already buying the sgs2. I’ve had enough of waiting without word. This is one die hard motorola fan that just died… hard… sammy is my new brand of choice nice work motorola way to keep the profits rollin’
i hope it comes out on august 4th. verizon and motorola both said summer launch, which rules out september… unless there’s something seriously wrong with their calender. if it does arrive in september, i’m waiting for a better phone. the specs will no longer be top of the line. and the dinara will be out a few months after.
Done waiting! I had this phone bought in head the moment it was announced. But “Hang tight” is not something I wanna hear for 8 months. I don’t mind getting a phone and having it be out performed some 6 months later. That’s just the way technology is now, but to get a phone and have it be outdated and old within a month or tow is not something I want to invest in. Sorry Moto looks like Samsung took a potential customer from you and if the bionic turns out good you probably lost yourself a lifer since I probably would have kept buying motos in the future. O’well here I come Sammie.
I hope I phone 5 is 4g
If so, NO MORE MOTO. EVER. I was a lifelong customer .
If it’s going to be September, I’m going with something else, no questions asked. I hate how they’ve strung us along with this. I make corporate income tax software, and if we blew a release like that, we’d be out of business for good. By that time, the nexus 3/prime and iphone 5 will almost be out. Byebye moto…
The Verizon sign-up page.. seems like a big blackhole… haven’t heard a thing since the “Thank You for signing up”… u would think they would say something to out there.. Th Thunderbolt may have been delayed weeks.. but I think that the Bionic delay lots longer in terms of months…. and the rumor after rumor after rumor, and rubber stamped (copied) articles, I know these articles aren’t written by real reporters (and if they are why are they reporting speculation) but give us a break…
I’ve had only moto phones (since startac) and I’m a little ticked at the lack of respect that Moto and Verizon are giving their customers.. it is almost like they really don’t want us to be their customers..
I only hope my original Droid can hang in there, till the Bionic comes out, it is very agrivating with the random reboots, loss of bluetooth, and just not doing what it is asked to do.. I’ve been waiting since March..
I don’t think it will be that far off. My son is a Regional Manager for Verizon. His main store got their demo model in yesterday. And he confirmed only a 4.3″ display. He hasn’t heard anything official but still feels like the launch will be next Thursday (Aug. 4). He said one week prior to launch is typically when they get their demo unit and don’t get the real units until about 3 days before. He also said they never launch a new phone on a holiday weekend (Labor day).
Moto will be making a GIANT mistake if they plan to release the Bionic at the same time as the iPhone5. If that is the case, grabbing the iPhone will be a bonus after waiting this long for the Bionic.
If Moto holds out on the Bionic until September and, as promised, Sammy finally releases the Galaxy S II in August, I’ll most likely be buying the SGS2, especially if Moto hasn’t even given a firm release date by the time SGS 2 is released.
i’m getting sick of this ish. my droid, which i loved for the first year, is dying a slow death. i pumped myself up to go Bionic since i couldn’t go Atrix (which really had my attention), though now i’m wondering if i can hold up for a dual core, lte, 1gig ram phone that will slap the iPhone and Bionic around, oh and it has to have a removable battery.
oddly enough this morning i was just wondering what happened to moto. they have made arguably the 3 best cell phones ever in their past: StarTac, V60 and the Razor. Notice none of their smart phones are up there IMO. I think i’m going to have to do a review of the best (not necessarily the prettiest) cell phones of all time.
Summer does not end until Sept 20th
Quit being led like sheep people. If Motorola promised the Bionic in April, and then reneged on their promise….DONT BUY A BIONIC.
I was going to hold out for the Bionic also, but when my Moto Droid started dying out, I upgraded last month to the LG Revolution, and I am happy I did. Not all of the fanfare that the Bionic has had, but it is a good solid smartphone. I’m sure there will be better phones on the market next year…better than the Revo and Bionic.
I hate how companies hold consumers hostage, so I weighed my options.
How much better is my life going to be having the Moto Bionic v. another phone?
For me, the Binic would not have improved on my quality of life so I chose the Revo.
I agree with Just Nasty. I went and boud a Droid Charge and luv it. 4g, plenty fast for real world use, and the screen is OMG…
Thanks for the feedback guys, but it looks like Moto’s CEO confirmed the Droid Bionic is coming only in September (see the Update link in the post). What will you do?
Verizon NEVER releases phones on a holiday week. And this is the Labor Day weekend. And I suspect many of us are going to be major disappointed.
nobody considers September as summer, the date is irrelevant!
Last I checked, the entire western world considers summer Sept 20th the end of the summer solstice. Dates are very relevant in my world.
nobody? irrelevant? you’re 16 aren’t you?
